I think I have a digital dash issue. My dash was rebuilt about 1500 miles ago. Tonight I was driving home and the whole dash got brighter then normal. The temp gauge went from Fahrenheit to Centigrade all by itself. The hot light seemed to light along with the centigrade temp of 173. Since I was on my block i pulled into the garage and the car was idling at 1200 rpms. I switched the dash button to centigrade and then back to Fahrenheit and the temp read 235, but instantly went back to 173 centigrade. I turned the car off started and the idle was normal and the temp gauge did the same thing?? Any suggestions?
I don't believe those functions are in the dash--the dash just displays them. If the analog gauges all displayed normally, then the signals to them from their sensors are good (assuming you have a 90+ dash that has analog gauges). If only the digital portion is wonky, then that points to a problem with the Central Control Module, not the dash. However, if the engine's idle is affected, then the PCM also thinks something is wrong. I don't know what year car you have, but my very first test would be to plug my laptop into the ALDL port and see what data the PCM is seeing. I might also do the paperclip thing to see if there are any stored codes.

Well, then you can disregard just about everything I just said, since your '84 doesn't have analog gauges or a CCM. You can still plug into the car's ALDL port and try to see if the information on the dash matches what your ECM is seeing if you have access to a scan tool for your vehicle, but everything else I said does not apply to a 1984. Sorry I can't be of more help.
