I have a 96 convertible that needs a new top, I took it to a shop here locally and they quoted me $1900 the headliner is still good, I would be paying for a new canvas top with glass window and defroster, weatherstripping and cables and installation, I can buy a new top online for around $500, their price seems excessive am I wrong?
I had a canvas top replaced this spring on a 92 with a plastic back window. It cost me $1600. $900 for the labor, $425 for the top, and $275 for the weatherstripping. My head liner was good also. I also recommend Robbins Brand tops. I found one on sale from EZsofttops.com. The one for a 96 with the glass back window is a couple hundred dollars more than mine was. Some shops won’t let you buy the top.
Original top on my '89 is still in very good condition so want to just get rid of the cloudy window.
I started down that road with my 89, but the top has to be completely removed to swap out the window so I decided to have the glass window conversion done. I will say that the stitching on my top was not in the best shape either.
The quote is certainly in the ball park.
I had my top replaced this year and labor was around $900 and I used the old liner. I purchased my replacement in stages. First the quality canvas top ($450) early last year, then later the weatherstrip kit ($275). I installed the weatherstrip myself and saved some on that. What a job that is.........wow!
Certainly all worth it though, totally changed the look of the car.
I had my 95 convertible top replaced about 18 months ago, Kept the headliner, replaced the weather stripping, $1250 for the whole package. The new top included the glass window and rear defogger.
