Default update 1991 C4

Hi guys, car progressing nicely. Weatherstripping....A/C fixed....bringing paint back, headlight gears finished...put in the air foil today ( a bit of a difference) etc...lots of fun...
Ordered a new serpentine belt and will put on this weekend.

There is a round heavy disk that sits in front of the engine. about 10 inches around. I had come across in the forum where people had removed it because it was useless and they gained HP? Don't even know how to do a search for that lol but it looks like it just bolts off. I figured if I'm already there putting on the new serpentine belt, might as well take this thing off too?

Any thoughts?...What the heck is that thing for anyway?

I think most refer to it as a Frisbee. Sounds like you coming along nicely. Lets see some pics.

Never really saw the point in ditching the frisbee, other than maybe seeing more of the front of the motor.

What it's for is to reduce the shock when the AC clutch engages.

If you do take it off, which is effectively pointless, but if you do, then use washers on the bolts in order to accommodate the thickness of the frisbee.

The question has also been brought up as to whether or not the water pump bearings would go sooner. Dunno if anyone has ever tested that theory or not, though.

Today, at Corvettes at Carlisle, Gordon Kilabrew was giving a Q & A session at the 35th Registry tent. I asked him why the "frisbee" had been added to the front of the 1988 L98 water pump pulley.

He said that it was installed to dampen out vibrations when the AC cycled on/off. He further said that it was later found that it caused the belt to chirp and so eventually GM omitted this element from the water pump pulley.

He then said that we could just take it off and all would be fine.
I do believe that Gordon Killebrew should be quite believable. Taking it off won't hurt anything.

Thats why I leave mine on...ac vibration doesnt help...removed it on another C4 I had no difference in ET so...
Usually rotational engine parts dont matter far as that goes.

If you own a C4, Mr Killebrew should be your idol. The man has forgotten more than most C4 owners will ever learn about their cars. He’s one my hero’s. I have been a C4 junkie since I was 15 when I saw my first 1984 Corvette in 1984. I now a few of them.
