Hey guys, so I have an 84 z51. How can I tell if I have the j55 brake setup? I’m attaching my rpo codes, I see z51, but I don’t see the other packages to make it have the j55. Reason I’m asking is because I have the 17” Amold wheels and I would like to do a brake upgrade in the future. Need to be able to stop this LS 6.0L
Well ****, lol. What are the options for brake upgrades then?
Any 'improved brake upgrades' for an '84 need to be very well thought out. All of the caliper mounting hardware, rear shoe-in-rotor hardware and bracketry is a one year only specification. Any thing that's mentioned for an '85 - '87 can't be considered to be a 'direct bolt-on' for an '84.
What's been already modified (if anything) other than the 6.0?

You can put anything you want on the car, but you'll need the correct type of adapter plate to mount later calipers on the early car. I believe the bracket for the C5 conversion needs a spindle adjustment to work on 84, like some bolt hole needs to be drilled out, then you'd buy the 85-87 adapter for C5 brakes and all the C5 parts. The C5 parts are basically just like J55s.
Of course Baer or Wilwood or EBC would probably have a full package that costs twice as much to sell you off the shelf that includes an 84-specific adapter.
But best to run a search or ask an 84-specific question to someone whos done it.

Lol, who really knows what’s been done. When I bought the car I was told the Crossfire system had been replaced with the TPIS system. However, when he put it up for sale he had converted it back to Crossfire. Said he put new poly bushing in the suspension, but why did it still have black rubber when I changed one of the bushings that was worn out? Lol. And if you own an 84 than you know the radiator shroud and hood have no gap to fit a TPIS air filter box into. So obviously he was full of ****.
What I have done to the car is remove the L83 engine and harness. Replaced with the 6.0L LS. Stock 700r4 tranny. It has a strut brace in front of the engine. It has late model bumpers and lights, F&R.
