Hi My 1995 Corvette has a rattling sound coming from the clutch when the car is in neutral. Soon as I depress the clutch the noise goes. Any suggestions as to what it could be and is it a big, expensive fix.
I would certainly give the ZF manual transmission fluid a change. I have been using Amsoil and have had good luck with it for years.
But the noise is more than likely your throw out bearing.
Mine was noisy at idle until I pushed the clutch in and then it was quiet.
Replacement of the throw out bearing as you probably know requires removal of the C beam, transmission, and bell housing. You must be careful when removing the bell housing to loosen the clutch fork ball stud first!
Another words after the transmission is removed, access the allen plug and remove it (it is removed by turning it counter clockwise). This will now expose the back of the clutch fork ball stud which also has an allen head. This unscrews clockwise not counterclockwise (very important as you can damage the clutch fork)!!
Once the ball stud is completely loosened then you can start to remove the bell housing.
Good luck but certainly try a manual transmission fluid change first.

My guess is a lot simpler: someone already replaced your stock dual-mass flywheel with a solid flywheel, and now you're hearing the normal noise the ZF6 transmission makes without the dual-mass flywheel. That was the entire reason for the massive DM flywheel: to damp the noise of the countershaft in the transmission. It's not really a flaw and it won't hurt anything. There is a shim kit you can get that may help quiet it down somewhat.
Agreed, if the flywheel (DMF) was replaced with a single mass flywheel this could be the noise for sure! Adding the thicker shim from Bill Boudreau (ZFdoc) on your countershaft of the ZF transmission will pretty much eliminate the noise, at least it did on mine.
