The 6-speed has a feature called "CAGS" (Computer Assisted Gear Shift) which was installed for fuel economy reasons. Essentially if you're in 1st gear, under 17 MPH, and under a certain throttle percentage, then when you try to shift into 2nd that light will come on, and the transmission will force you into 4th gear instead.
If the dash indicator lights up while driving but the transmission is not forcing you to slip into 4th, then someone at some point has disabled the CAGS solenoid on the transmission without reprogramming the ECM accordingly. This is incredibly common.
