Default Cat Removal

I have a 1993 base model C 4 and I would like to remove the cat converters in hopes of a deeper Corvette sound. Are there any problems with this such as the location of sensors or anything else that would interfere. Would this give the car a more "throaty" sound as opposed to grandma's oldsmobile? I know that I would have to have extensions of pipe but is there anything else that I should be concerned with? Thank you so much for the advice and help this time and in the past.

Deeper, no. Louder? Maybe.

I had surgery done on my 93 LT1 vert a year ago. The cut was made just rearward of the o2 sensors and true duals were run back into the existing stock mufflers. The car now sounds awesome at idle and really sounds good at wot. There is no interior drone we often hear about. I get is a slight rap when down shifting, other than that zero issues. This modification has created NO check engine lights.

It sounds like you also eliminated the resonator. Is that the case? I’ve been contemplating removing the cats for some time now but was going to keep the resonator.

If you want to make it sound deeper cut out the resonator and replace the mufflers with 40 series flow masters or chambered muffler eliminators. I have no first hand experience removing the cats form an LT1
however if you pull the factory exhaust and fire it up running off the cats it’s loud as **** and rumbles so the cats aren’t the problem. They’re pretty free flowing really.

I have two 02 sensors on my 92 LT1, one on each side at the beginning of the exhaust pipe after the manifolds. The cut was made immediately to the rear of the O2 sensors. The cats, Y pipe, and the big resonator are gone. Strainght pipes run from the cut directly to the factory mufflers. Everything looks original factory when viewed topside. As I said, it sounds great without the interior drone and no check engine lights.

After my full header install with turbo mufflers and cat removal I experience a strong smell like the car is running very rich. It sounds great but the smell is obnoxious. I am considering reinstalling the new cat I bought for it and reconnecting the air pipe coming from the air pump. I left all the emissions plumping in place in case it was reneeded.

My '88 had rattley front cats so I had them removed but kept the back one. Post catectomy the car had a much nicer note. In fact my neighbour - a V8 fan who has restored a 60ish Caprice - says that my Corvette now sounds like a V8 should. I also had a comment the other day by the owner of a '62 Imperial that my car sounded "awesome" as I drove it down my driveway. So - at least in the 1988 - no issues with O2 sensors or drone. Not loud at all but just nice.

I cannot imagine removing cats but leaving rest of exhaust would change the sound much at all. Maybe some more pops occasional from unburnt exhaust if it gets hot enough. Leaving cats and changing muffler, cat back pipes, resonators, or headers would have drastic sound difference both pro/con.

I find the best sound from 439 steel exhaust with big open chamber muffler and a x-crossover pipe between the dual pipes to rear.
