while I am making a mess everywhere with the fuel lines in my 85 - I had the ac compressor out of the way and this seems like a good time to change some radiator hoses - I noticed the ac delco hose that I bought for the lower hose does not have a spring and the one on the car now does - Is it supposed to have a spring inside? or is the delco hose correct for not having a spring?
It couldn't hurt to transfer the spring from the old hose to the new one, if it's not a rusted mess. The purpose of the spring is to ensure that the lower hose doesn't collapse and choke off coolant flow when the water pump is spinning at very high revs.
If AC Delco thought their hose might collapse, they'd have put a spring in there to prevent it. You'll probably be fine without one. If it were mine, I'd move the spring from the old hose to the new one, unless it's a rusted mess. Can't hurt to have one in there.
