Would these work on my 90. I know they will throw the speedometer out but will there be other ill effects?
Actually, these tire sizes are pretty good and won't throw your speedometer off. We can't answer your question about fitment because we have no idea what the offsets are. Give us that info and we can advise you.
I'll never understand why anyone would post wheels for sale and not give the offsets.
Anyway, the fronts have 56mm offset and would not need spacers - they would fit the same as the 93-96 17x8.5 et56 wheels. The rears have 79mm offset, which means 8.61" of backspacing. That's too much and they will hit things on the inside. You would really want something like 1" spacers, which would cut the net offset down to 54mm. For plain "pass-through" spacers you would have to install wheel studs with at least 1" more threaded length. You could also use adapters instead.
I totally agree Matthew, I have been running 245/40ZR18's 56mm all around for a while and JUST added, 285/30ZR19's to the rear. I'm running coil overs all around but as Matthew said I had to add one inch adapter /spacers on the rear I don't have any rear clearance issues at all.
I'm looking to go up to 18's but the ones I am looking at have offsets around 33-45 mm. Sticking with 285 tires on a 9.5 wheel do you guys think it will stick out too much? I dont want it out the upper fender lip.

On an 88-96 C4 that's going to be really close at 33mm or may actually stick out. You can get away with 45mm though if the wheels aren't wider than 10". How wide are they?
