I've been looking for a service manual for my 93. See them on ebay, both the prelim issue and the 2 vol issue. What is the difference and is the prelim issue adequate for a not up-to-date mechanic (gave it up many years ago).

The prelim manual is quite adequate. You might try this link ($35): http://www.factoryautomanuals.com/

I clicked on that link...My '96 manual is two volumes and about 3" high. Sounds like something is missing.

I thought people on this forum had seen prelim '96 manuals, and it was missing quite a bit of stuff. Could be mistaken though...

Sounds like something is missing.
You are correct, JasonL. The missing info covers the automatic and manual transmission, which is included in the 1992 manuals. Not many of us service our transmissions, so that info is not vital. The prelim covers most of our service needs. It is just about money, and sufficient information. I have found the prelim manual to provide all my service needs for my '93 for the last 8 years.
