Not so much under the hood. My ABS pump is in the storage compartment behind the driver's seat under the black removable tray. I think we have pretty much deduced that the 85 does not have ABS. Not necessarily a bad thing. I just spent 2 grand replacing my pump.
We're just trying to drive to the next rally, not going to the moon . Most informative article, thank you drcook. It would be wonderful to have that feature if it always worked, but I'd hate to see the repair bill if it ever went bad.........and you know some day it WILL give you trouble. I'm an "old school" (75 years old) kind of driver and I'm quite satisfied mine doesn't have it. I have enough problems...don't need any more.$$$$$. Having said all that I was totally interested in the article, learned alot from it. Thank you very much drcook

EDIT:Just saw the post above....see I told you so.

Yes, someday it will give you trouble. Nice thing about ABS is you don't need it until you need it. At that point, if you are better and more consistent than a system designed to outdo you, it doesn't matter if you have it or not. I made a mistake decades ago, when I first learned to drive and didn't know how to brake it right. 4 flat spotted tires and an accident that could have killed me, I learned that I wanted it. I'm a better driver today than I was starting out but as to whether I can work the brakes right as well CONSISTENTLY do it every time I have an emergency, I'm not ashamed to say that I can't. Besides, my 91 is still original as was my 99 E300 with 480K. That said, in time it will break and cost me money. In any case, I got way more money than I got body. Even if I didn't, I can earn it back. Rebuild my body? Not so easy.
My 86 has ABS. It's amazing that it still works after 35 years. I like to exercise it regularly. If it ever becomes a problem it is really simple to remove and bypass. Several threads on that in this forum.

I would use it regularly enough it won't matter. Plus I do make sure my brake fluid is flushed every 2 years for all my cars. Take 1 day as a flush day for all cars, powersports, etc, etc. If it does fail on me, NFW would I ever consider a bypass. I'd consider it rolling off a cliff before I do a bypass if it is too expensive assuming I can't sell it as is.
It cost me 2000 to get the ABS fixed. That included a used pump 450, a master cylinder 400, and a complete flush and refill. That's a lot of money on a car I purchased for 7500 but I never considered a bypass. Just couldn't see removing safety equipment that can save my ***.

All my other cars and vehicles that have brakes have ABS so I want to keep it consistent and not wonder which system I have and what to do in a panic stop. If I can't fix it reasonably, I'll sell it to someone who doesn't care.
