My Son puts together Car shows for his charity called "FIRST CLASS CHILDRENS FOUNDATION" , I try and help him register, or park cars, or whatever he needs help with, It was a cold rainy day, but he managed to get about 100 cars to show up, all in all, pretty nice turn out for the weather.
Two C8 corvettes registered for the Event, and i got a chance to talk with the owners, both really nice fellows, one older, one quite young. What really made me think about Corvette, and were the brand is heading, Is neither of the cars owners, EVER owned a corvette previously. So maybe GM hit it out of the park with this car, because the nay sayers, and traditionalists who have whined about the cars mid engine design, forgot one important ingredient for the survival of Corvette. New Buyers!
Both of them liked my car, the older Guy commented on the window sticker i had for the car, The price was 47 grand and change for the 96 Convertible, to which he replied, wow, my car didn't cost a hell of a lot more than yours did 25 years ago! I said nope, That's progress!
What's even more impressive, actually, is that your 96 convertible's price, adjusted for inflation from 1996, is actually $80,000 in 2021. The C8 converible base price starts at $68,495.
So it's not just progress, it's downright amazing how much GM managed to do for so little money. They've essentially managed to keep the base price of the Corvette exactly the same all these years.
I finally drove a C8 just the other day, and it really was an impressive vehicle for not a lot of money. If I could justify the lease, you bet your *** I'd have one to go with my two C4s in a heartbeat. Right now, though, that would be fiscally irresponsible. So I'll probably buy a third C4 instead.
The C8 is an amazing car, made even more so by the (relatively) affordable MSRP. I can see why it would attract a few first time buyers, but it has also alienated some of those current owners who will never buy another one. Weather or not GM made the right call will take a few years to be seen.
I'm not sure either, I think they are a fantastic car, but, the base model engine bay plastics leave much to be desired, the short stubby arrow shaped front end, is not real attractive to me, when the rear engine/trunk, lid is open, the car looks very disproportioned to what I'm use to seeing, I'm not so sure I love it or hate it, it makes the car look odd, 2/3rds of the car is behind the drivers seat. but! close everything up? and the car looks very sharp. never been a big fan of the duct work.
