Default C4 corvette project

I have been looking for a project to work on with my 20 year old son. We are ok on the mechanical side but want a project to work on together. Not just fix and drive but something we can continually tinker with.

his gf’s family has a c4 that has not been drive. In 10 years or so because of aging grandparents. If this car was given to us is it a good place to start a project or is it better to find something dependable and work on it from there.

i don’t mind having a shop put in motor transmission rear if we go that rout but would it be better to get one already in process.

not looking for a track car.

A C4 is a very fun car to drive. At times it'll start filling up the cuss jar but I've always found it rewarding in the end.

What year is it?

As an aside, next time you see the car, try to get a picture of the build sticker. Or RPO code sticker, that's the correct term I guess. Should be on the under side of the lid of the center console. Just lift it up, snap a picture and post it. With the current owner's permission, of course. It'll tell you what the car is actually equipped with and you'll know what you're working with.

If "given to us" means free you're ahead of the game. Then it's just a matter of how big your budget is.

As 777 said, free could be good or bad depending on your budget. You’re gonna need tires if it has been sitting for a decade, so your already putting multiple hundreds into it.
If you remove the personal connection to the car, would it be worth it?
You can find a decent looking running C4 with reasonably new tires for 5K-ish that you can drive today while making mechanical improvements over time.

It's not a bad project but also depends on what you consider as a project. Are you looking to make power out of it? or just restore it back to new condition? If restoring then there is plenty of tinkering that can be done. All new bushings, new window seals, door panels, etc. while these parts aren't expensive they aren't cheap either. $200-300 here n there add up but if you're doing it to spend time with your son then it's money well spent.
