Ill get pics later, but the issue i have is concerning the targa top storage brackets. 88. I just did all new carpet and ordered new bracket covers. I bolted the brackets down and when I put the covers on them, they don't even come close to touching the carpet on the bottom or the slanted sides....were the brackets supposed to be installed before the carpet? Can't see that being an issue but had to ask. I didn't have covers until now, so didn't realize this was an issue.
Ill get pics tonite but just wanted to ask. Thanks
Thanks........dammit. Ok.....still seems like I wouldn't be able to get rid of that gap even if its under the carpet. Thats why I was thinking I was missing something
Yeah, something isn't right with the setup in that picture you posted.
As you said, even if the bracket was under the carpet you are going to to gain much.
Are you sure that is even the right bracket?
Since I have a '96 also, mine look just like the pic ColaBear posted.
To me, it looks like you have the bracket installed wrong?

They were the brackets that came off back in 2003..been in a box until now...thought maybe I was missing a piece? I have the FSM and I don't see anything.....not sure what could be wrong.
The "gap" is about 1-1/4" thats exposed.....I gotta be missing something......the carpet wouldn't make that up.
Any chance someone can pull their cover off one of the brackets and take a pic? Thanks
i don't know if that helps - my cover would slide over completely (even without the crack in it) the seat belt bracket/bar i put in gets in the way of the plastic cover - the carpet does go over as there was a cut out for it -

hope that helps
Thanks...Im still puzzled by this. Thought maybe the brackets are wrong, or a newer style, but they are date coded 83.....
I just took a look at my car (a '96) and the brackets are definitely attached under the carpet. When I press down around them, there is a lot of give. Maybe what you need to do is relocate your brackets underneath the carpet and add some additional padding to "shim up" the carpet so that it is flush with the bottom of your brackets. The carpet around my brackets feels very well padded and the carpet springs back up a good bit when pushed down.

Thanks for that. Wish I knew this before i put the carpet in, but it is what it is. Never thought the brackets would be there before carpet gets put in, but not the 1st time this car has thrown me for a loop....
I measured from the bracket to the carpet is 1.25 inches, so that should be whet your seeing.
Couple of other questions. Why is the bracket held by bolts. There should be a reinfocement plat rivited to the tub that has studs. Shims, wahsers and nuts hold the bracket down.
The rubber inserts are missing, and as far as I know no one is reproducing the early style inserts. Might be a good time to swap to the later style. That's what I did with my 92.

Thanks...it is held down by nuts, just looks like bolts in the pictures. And I had rubber to put into bracket as well. I thought about going to the later style down the road, but for now just wanted the interior more done after all this time. But of course what should have taken 5 minutes is now a project.....
So I saw this pic on the forum here...those plastic pieces on the sides would take up the gap ( but not the bottom)....do all these cars have those pieces? Kinda moot point as the carpet is glued down and those pieces would have to be cut to clear the roll bar anyways. But I guess I'm just looking for closure lol...
This winter ill end up doing something different. Maybe fab my own brackets and fiberglass covers.
