C4 can’t go into reverse
I actually did figure out the problem! And I hope this thread will find someone who needs it in the future! Yes. It’s a 4+3
The linkage connecting to the transmission originally was disconnected. so my brother and I, mostly my brother was underneath the car slowly adjusting first and second, then third and fourth to where it felt comfortable coming in and out of ear on the shift lever itself. but then when we tried to figure out why the reverse rod was not moving we decided to dig a little deeper into the interior of the car!
I removed the center bezel around the radio a few screws on the dash to loosen everything up along with the screws that hold the small plastic panel in front of the passenger seat. Then removed all of the screws holding down the center consul. Then painstakingly figure it out how to remove the push button overdrive, unscrew the shifter, and pull the entire center consul and shift boot up and out of the way.
once we were able to see down inside of me shifter mechanism itself, there was a rod that was connected to the back of the shifter that goes to a table that bed behind the HVAC controls that goes up and into the steering column.
I did a little digging online and found out that that is called the reverse lockout cable. The only one that I found available was $300 on eBay which in my opinion is a little ridiculous. I disconnected the eclip holding the rod to the shifter. And wouldn’t you know reverse actuated correctly, and verified that the reverse rod going into the transmission actuated normally with no binding.
i’m assuming that the reverse lockout was placed there originally to prevent you going from 1st to 2nd and by accident going into reverse if you were shifting quickly you’re not paying attention to where your hand was on the collar.
has anyone disconnected the reverse lock out without any issues? Considering how much the replacement part was I think I’m going to try it for now until either it bothers me or some other issue happened because of it.
thanks everyone -Johnny A
