So friends, I'm having a super hard time, shifting my 85 Doug Nash. I take off in 3rd sometimes, and I'm going to fourth sometimes when I want second. .so I got an awesome 3d printer, and was thinking of making a gate plate, for my tranny. Any thoughts, or even a pattern if anyone else has done it.. thanks in advance.
First of all, I think a gate is a cool idea if you want to do it.
But, let me offer - if you're having issues shifting now it means that most likely your shifter mechanism has developed issues with wear tolerances that are causing the sloppy movement of the linkage, and that needs to be fixed regardless of whether you have a gate or not. If you gate it, and your mechanism is not brought back to the way it should function, then even with the gate you're likely to have some missed shifts. That could be really bad in some circumstances.
Your shifting into wrong gear to start out has nothing at all to do with it being a Doug Nash overdrive. The overdrive is a separate animal all together.

yeah, I know , I was stating that I had a manual . Even my mechanic has stated it off in third, I just mentioned a gate, because I'm getting older, and sometimes I hit fourth instead of second. And sometimes I miss first in lui of third. Thought a gate might help. Can't afford a auto conversion.
Just practice pushing the shifter to the Left to go in first, straight back to Second, push the shifter a little to the Right for 3rd, Straight back for 4th. The shifter is designed to do this on its own. As stated , adjust the shifter. I took mine apart and replaced the nylon shifter bushings with bronze.
