Hey.. I've been having so much trouble with the TPI on my '87 that I'm seriously thinking about dropping in a fresh motor and using a carb instead of fuel injection. Has anyone done this before? Isn't the ecu gonna raise hell not seeing the TPI any more? The car is never gonna be anything really special, it's sat too long. I figure if I can have some fun playing with it, it might just be all the use I ever get out of it! Besides.. I've been eyeballing a 2016 lately and I really need to stop with that! ;-) Thanks!
You need to change the fuel pump regulator, possibly modify some stuff on the charging system and use a non EFI distributor off the top of my head... Then you lose some dash function depending but it can be made to work relatively easy... That is if you don't keep the ECM in the loop at all. There are plenty who have converted. You also need a short intake and a drop air cleaner because a regular wont fit under the hood iirc.
Thanks for your thoughts on this, I was afraid it wouldn't be that straight forward.. You hear so much about how some people just don't care much for the factory TPI that I'm reluctant to put more time/money into it, but it's too nice of a car to just scrap. I spoke with some folks at Edlebrock who are real enthusiastic about selling me one of their aftermarket fuel injection setups, it's tempting as they have some pretty sweet systems that'll bolt right in! It's been tormenting me as I really wanted to restore the car in honor of the man that used to own it before he passed away. I guess I'm just gonna have to decide what it is I'm trying to do here because I'm running out of driveway!! Thanks again, you folks are the best!
thats too bad. do you have a thread with issues we can help you with?
Not really. The forum was titled "General Discussion".. I was just curious to see what other might think about my predicament. Thanks for taking an interest!
