Since I bought my vette, it seems to run differently everytime I drive it. Sometimes it runs great. I had it up to 180ks (110mph) at one time and it just wanted to go more without missing a beat. But sometimes it backfires, blows black smoke and generally runs like a pig. I have been mucking with the electrics a bit and have had the battery disconected a few times, so I am asuming that the computer needs a long drive to sort itself out. I tried getting the error codes from the ECM but the check engine light is not working. Does this meen I have to pull the dash apart to check/change the bulb.
If the ECM is not working properly, will the car still run? If so will it run like this? I can't check any of this until I know the bulb is working etc.
Any thoughts would be appreciated as I know three fifth of *&%$ all about these cars being a new owner
Re: Running Rough, Check engine light not working (timallard)
The first thing is if you don't have a Helms manual, get one. Next, either replace the Check engine light or borrow /buy a code scanner. Either way you need to see if any codes are stored as that will direct you to a potiental problem(s). Your symptoms point to a number of things. Good Luck.
Re: Running Rough, Check engine light not working (timallard)
Hmmm, if you want to see if the SES light is working just turn the key forward enough so that the power to the radio works. I don't know about the older C4s, but on mine, when the key is turned that far without turning the car on, the SES light comes on. If that doesn't work, try disconnecting your IAT or MAF sensor and turning the car on for a second or two. This will turn your SES light on (if it works) but will require you to reset the computer to get rid of the SES light, which will also erase all of the stored codes that it would hold telling about the backfiring and what not.
EDIT: As far as I know, the backfiring is a problem with the engine, not something electrical. Your engine might be detonating.
