If your car is not a Z51, then it should have 16x8.5 wheels front and rear. This allows a pretty easy solution: get 245/50/16 tires instead. They'll be 10mm narrower and about 1/3" shorter but they'll fit/work/look good and there are several good choices in that size.

The 245/50r16 is an easy solution and still looks pretty good. You won't really notice the difference and it actually gives you options. If you have a z51, your rears will be the wider 9.5 wheel and then you may have an issue.

I went with a set of 245's as street tires for my '87 last fall. So far, I have been happy with them all around.

I ended up with these cheap Riken Raptor tires from Tire Rack. So far, I've been very impressed for the money.

Raptors are a great value tire. I had some for my "winter" tires on my C4. If the OP lets us know what his planned uses of the car are and in what weather conditions he plans to use it, we can discuss tire recommendations within the recommended size.

We need to get together and try and get them to make a new run before March 1st while B.F. Goodrich still has the tooling. If the Corvette Forum members can all get together and order a few thousand tires. I would order a set or 2. that's 8 tires right there. Whom ever runs this site may be able to start this off. Thank you, all 84 to 87 users would be happy.

I doubt it would get momentum going. One of 2 things is probably going on since I don't recall any direct response from BFG. Either they're waiting to do a batch eventually and simply making other tires that are more profitable. Or they did pull it all together. But I don't recall anyone getting a direct response from bfg.

Edit: basically im saying figure out what the deal is in writing before jumping to any conclusions. Also, they haven't pulled the tire from their own website yet which doesn't mean much but you'd think they would list it as a discontinued size no?

Lets hope they still make them even if only a batch or two...

It's entirely possible once things are a little more normal that they start making them again. But it is all speculation on my part for that. No one seems to know or have a direct response from BFG.

Same problem here in New Zealand! I've been trying to order 255/50 ZR16 (I have BFGs on at the moment). Also, cannot even get 245/50 in the country...!
Have to get them imported

Default Tires

Hi everyone, I ordered a set of BFG G-Force Sport Comp 2 tires in 255/50ZR16 from Coker tire in December, they placed the order and they said they were n back order and that I will get them in March. I talked to a guy at Coker yesterday and he said that I will get them this month, he said Michelin will be making the tire, I will let everyone know hat happens with this order, I will call them again in a couple weeks if I do not hear from them.

I called BFG yesterday and talked to a rep, who asked around and said they have discontinued the 255/50R16's as of March. I had an order with Discount Tire placed last week and they called me to say they are were on "National Backorder" with no ETA. Just got my '85 a week ago, tires on it are from the 90's so looks like I'll be going with 245's unless I can find a set on eBay or something.

Here DownUnder, I was quoted about $NZ580 *each* for BFG 255/50 ZR16s, with an 8 to 10 week delivery. Further enquiries revealed that Goodrich would tool up and produce a batch when there are enough orders. So rather than wait an indeterminate time, I discussed this with the company that I decided to deal with and settled on a set of Kumho PS31 or PA31 245/50s at about half the cost. In any case there are NO other options. It seems that they are available here so no need to import I hope.
The Corvette guy I deal with suggested that the 245/50s would be fine.

Thumbs down to BFG!

There are other options: you can order track-focused tires in 255/50/16 from Toyo. I would opt for the Proxes RA1 since it has more street/rain-friendly tread and depth, but the R888R can work on the street as well. These entail compromises, though, because they aren't true street tires. They will wear very quickly and won't work at all in freezing temps. The R888R is also very loud and not very good in the rain. If you have 16x9.5 wheels, these are probably better than stretching 245s onto them.

I don't understand the "thumbs down to BFG" thing. They are saying there isn't enough demand for the OE size to justify a production run. Are you saying they should be willing to lose money to satisfy the owners of a few 35-year-old cars? Does that make sense?

Yes, you make a valid point about BFG losing money - perhaps I was a bit harsh with the thumbs down. But having said that after reading comments on this forum from C4 owners searching for 255/50 16" tires, I'd say there are not just "a few" but qualify it by saying "quite a few" owners of 35-year-old cars needing (wanting?) them. I'm sure that BF Goodrich would be able to cover costs somehow. At NZ580 those 255/50s ain't cheap - I don't know what they'd cost in the US but with a small run BFG could charge a premium and owners would - maybe not happily - be prepared to part with $$$ to get them.
...And having said that, I had to fit 245/50 R16 tyres from Kumho for half the price. My only 255 option was Hankook slicks - didn't seem appropriate to have them on to run down to the local liquor store.
