had a couple of questions about carpet/replacing etc. I finally got the heater core fixed so carpet seemed like a doable thing now -
- first - i went to check wilcox - no website anymore? i saw the thread that says they may have had some trouble over the last year - so i thought about zip or corvette central as my next 2 - has anyone bought carpet from them before? i have gotten other things and both were good with that -
- also looking for opinions on mass back or poly -(i think with the poly i might look at some type of sound/heat protection - most likely negates the poly savings). is there much of a difference between the 2?
Got carpet from Top Flight (Corvette America) last summer. Went with mass back as I already used sound deadening in the entire car. 1988. Had to work around the roll bar but fit was great. I laid out all the pieces 1st for a few days as they were just shipped in a box and needed to be relaxed a bit. All in all happy with it. Just my .02
awesome - thanks - i was all set to use wilcox when the time came - but corvette central and zip were next up - mass back - sounds good i think they said it was the stock-type stuff- you mentioned putting it in I think i remember - i will check your threads too
I replaced mine with the mass backing.
Basically, with the mass backing if liquids get spilled it will not leak through to the padding underneath.
If the Jute gets wet, it must be replaced. Carpet can be cleaned.
I do not have a sound deadener - yet.
But I do have Jute padding, in a convertible.
I would go with the Mass Backing - I have been doing automotive upholstery as a living for well over 15 years.
I got mine from rockauto. It's the same ACC carpet the other guys sell for less. Or at least it was last year.
I ordered from Rock Auto and got Truevette mass backed. That was the best deal I found for my '94 convertible. I've been extremely happy with it. Replaced all the padding as well but found that ordering a role of Jute from Amazon was the best deal then just matched it to the old padding I had which wasn't that hard. Lastly, I ordered a generic kit of Noico butyl/foil backed noise deadening and covered the entire interior underneath. It was significantly cheaper than a precut set and any of the name brand stuff and it's so easy to cut and use that it was way worth it.
I would suggest the sound deadening as the very bottom layer if you are redoing your carpets. It has made tremendous difference the the overall squeaks and rattles in my car. It's extra weight but if you aren't racing it won't matter. Probably the single best thing I did.
Added new Al Knock seats too. But here's a look at the carpet
very nice - i was thinking about the extra sound deadening material - but was not sure about adding that to the mix or not - is that a self adhering product? - like a peel n stick?
Yes it has a layer that peels off and then it sticks. It's not like a a duct tape or crazy strong adhesive. It's more of a gummy type of adhesion and it will come off before you roll it. I think it's totally worth it especially on a convertible as long as you don't spend a ton on over priced name brand products. Noico was available on amazon. I got like 36sq ft for around $80 and it was 80mils thick which was. Dynamat was about twice the price. I would just encourage you to shop around and be aware of two things 1. Thickness in mils and 2. Price per square foot. Other than that my opinion is all this stuff is about the same.
