carpet is ordered for my '85 and i wanted to know if anyone had thoughts on the prep - to help get ready - i have the acc mass back on order - i was not sure about extra sound/heat insulation - can that be kind of a spot thing like foot well and trans tunnel ? glue edges only or will i need enough glue for the whole thing?
i was going to use simple green to clean - will that be enough?
I am also replacing my carpet from ACC with mass backing. I cleaned the inside with a adhesive cleaner, remover solvent. I am installing Duramat Extreme everywhere and then a .140 thick closed cell foam and then another layer of.140 foil backed closed cell foam. I am after extreme quieting and insulating factor.
I even installed the Duramat Extreme in the rear speaker enclosure”s, Boy or boy that was a extreme pain to do as I had to lay on my side and reach all the way to the back.
Thanks Hawkeye56

You might be dissapointed in the lack of sound deadening all that will give you. It will also be harder to fit some areas of carpet because of the huge thickness

I respectfully disagree with you regarding the thickness. With the thickness of my sound deadening totally I have.340 thickness.
I found.375 and.500 thickness of jute.

so it sounds like (maybe it's early and i am reading this wrong). the sound deadening is not necessary - or not as good as advertised so to speak?
I can definitely say that sound deadening works.
Last summer when I had the back of my car apart, I removed the rear fender liners and installed Duramat Extreme every where I could.
Now it was not a very large area but it did quiet down the road noise in the cab enough to notice the difference.
Now with all that I am doing I could hope but not expect it to be as quiet as my Lincoln 😊

I installed sound deadening stuff in mine. Made ZERO difference. If you want quieter, you need different mufflers
I did my whole car as well, and I went with the poly back. The deadening does work. Will not make it Caddy quiet, nor should it. But it quiets wind and road noise, as well as heat. I have full length headers and even after an hour of driving I can barely feel warmth by my right leg on the trans tunnel. I also just installed 4 speakers so far, and in the rear (besides deadening the cavity for speakers) I have insulation packed in there and the rear speakers sound great. No problems with carpet fit due to extra thickness as the original jute was pretty thick to begin with. And as far as glue goes I used 3M super 77 orange foam. In tight areas around roll bar and what not I used regular contact cement. No issues.
thanks everyone - i am somewhat presuming the mass back will help a little(i could be wrong) - i was curious about others experience and what can help - I am sure some day I may chase down some of the many rattles and shakes with the old car - but i would never expect a quiet car - quieter sure - it does get a little toasty around the feet and tunnel now so i would like to change that if possible - certainly something thin - I am pretty sure the new stuff comes with fresh jute also
i installed acc on my 86, no mass backed, and i found the best way was to position any 3d or 2d points on the carpet and then press using my hand over the various studs that protrude through the carpet. I just pressed and they popped right through. (seat studs, targa holder studs. I didnt use any glue anywhere. might be able to use palm to make impression in the mass back then drill?
I used simple green to wipe everything down.
my jute was saturated with mouse urine so that was not reused. instead i used copius amounts of “frost king” peel and stick insulation. It was cheap easy and i doubled it up on the tunnel and other areas. I think it was a waste of time.
If i do it again (and im sure i will) i will be looking for new or used-excellent condition (ie, not from a mouse infested roach) jute.
On that car, i had the cat gutted, and the “targa” silver muffler elims on it.
It was LOUD and the drone was insane but i was younger and didnt mind.

The only jute that came with my kit was:
Vertical panel behind the seats
Two 3/4 pieces for the forward foot area,
Nothing where the seats are.
Keep us posted on your progress.

thanks - was that duramat or dynamat - i found dynamat - also found some stuff from summit also - i think it is 1.5mm thick - i will keep looking
Dynamat Extreme
I ordered mine from Crutchfield.
I believe it is.062 thickness.
I ordered two 35 sqft boxes, I have used one box and 4 sheets from the other box so far. The rear is completely done along with the storage areas behind the seats. I have the passenger side foot area done.
I still have the complete driver side tunnel included, Along with the entire rear vertical panel behind the seats. I will probably use almost all of the second box.

I have a '94 convertible. I did the whole thing in Noico sound deadening from Amazon. I also bought a few yards of Jute and used it as well. I then had ACC Truevette Mass Backed carpet set.
Here are my thoughts:
1. Sound deadening definitely worth it to reduce overall road noise
2. Jute helps just to have some cushion under the carpet
3. I used 3M spray adhesive for the few pieces on the console but everything else fit pretty well with some simple hand manipulation.
4. I cleaned most of the inside with some alcohol. But be careful about using it on trim. I had a good amount of mold in the jute and old carpet and felt I really needed something to kill any residual.
4. I fixed, tightened or replaced every screw I could find in the interior and bought new trim pieces if the plastic warranted replacement. A full screw set is only about $25 and worth it IMO.
5. I kept all the old carpet and jute to use as templates for the new. And that made it simple.
6. Bought new floor mats to help protect said new carpet in footwells.
7. hardest part was recarpeting the doors sills but they actually came out fantastic once we figured it out.
Most of my rattles now are in the two door panels. Just haven't gotten to those yet.
