95 red coupe 6 speed, 43,000 miles. American racing headers, 3" exhaust and Corsa mufflers. Also has an SLP Blackwing air intake.
Pictures and lots of questions to come, but for now just a couple quick ones.
1. Car has no catalytic converter. Is that correct?
2. Exhaust sounds great and looks fairly new but drones too much on highway. What muffler suggestions do you have. I'd like it to sound like stock.
These look like Z06 wheels to me. The car is at my son's house for a week or so and I cannot get a look at the backside of the wheel to determine width and whether there are any other markings. I like the look. So do they look like aftermarket or Chevy wheels?
All C4's came from factory with catalytic converters . Your year had two larger converters that bolted directly to the exhaust manifolds . The converters did muffle the loudness . Headers and no cats would be louder than stock. Corsa mufflers use wave technology to stop the drone . My 91 ZR1 has headers minus the cats and complete 2.5 Corsa . It works well at normal highway cruise . Wide open throttle it gets loud .
The factory C5 Z06 wheels were made by Alcoa first and then Speedline . They should be marked inside by manufacturer. They probably are aftermarket versions sold by most Corvette parts companies like Mid America , Ecklers, or even on Ebay.
Those wheels are C6 Z06 pattern. You would have to look at the markings to determine whether they are real or replicas.
They're clearly replicas. Those wheels would have been 19" if they were stock c6z rears or 18s if fronts. Those wheels look to be 17s based on the factory brakes covered with a cheesy cover.
If they were oem c6z wheels, they'd also be Hella wide, 325s on the rear (I had 345s on my 1st GS), and indont think those would even fit a c4.
Those are C6 Z06 wheels and more than likely replicas because I don't believe you can fit a C6Z wheel onto a C4 in the rear. They don't look like a big enough diameter to be a real C6 wheel either.
Should be picking up the car tomorrow. I did get to check some RPO codes that were interesting.
J55 High-performance brake package. What is the difference - if any - between this and the standard brakes?
GM3 3.45 rear axle. Is this common among C4s?
I have the base suspension, FE1. Already knew I had FX3 selective ride.
NN5 and YF5 California emissions. I knew the car started out there. Is this like the "old days
" when California cars had less horsepower? Or does it not make a difference?
Thanks for all the help. Here's the only photo I took the day I bought it.

Sorry for the HUGE photo. I'll go smaller in the future.
And if anyone is interested in the caliper covers let me know. They will be for sale. I like the painted caliper look on this car and wouldn't mind the covers if they didn't have the fake bolt holes. Can't believe they cost $200+.

J55 brakes are a big.improvement over JL9, but they were standard for that year. Good pads on the J55 is as good as a c5 caliper upgrade, though the price for j55 swaps has made it less desirable vs a cheap c5 conversion.
Drove the car home yesterday and it ran great. Vibration in front at about 57 mph, disappears at 60 mph, probably due to worn 11 year-old tires.
Headers, no cats, 3" pipes and Corsa mufflers is too loud for highway driving. Gonna change out the mufflers to see if that helps. Any recommendations?
Dash and gauges all work, although AC controls are a little finnicky - and confusing. I watched a repair video. Cannot get oil pressure to show digital reading. Will check manual. Also, oil temp is only 208 degrees on an 85 degree day, cruising at about 60 mph in 6th. Should it be that low?
Tires and few minor repairs and I am ready to drive.

The ARH header systems can be purchased with or without cats. The PO of your car opted for no cats. The ARH systems are awesome so big plus for you there. Oil temp sounds about right to me. Find the threads/tutorials on here and YT videos regarding cleaning the button contacts on the control unit. As far as the drone, there might be a few things contributing to it. 3” diameter and no resonator on the ARH system being factors that stand out in my mind. The ARH system is an x-pipe with no resonator, definitely geared toward performance and to hell with drone type of thing. I’d be curious to see if swapping mufflers will help. Corsa is known for low/no drone with their systems but being that you have just the mufflers on the end of probably the most wide open system you can have, I’m not sure if swapping will help. Keep us posted. Congratulations on the C4 purchase, the coolest and best bang for the buck out there if you ask me.
I’ve made a lot of research regarding exhaust as I want more sounds from my LT1 and I found that it’s almost impossible to alter the stock exhaust without having drone so I decide to let it stock

Well...maybe this is subjective, but objectively for me I have a corsa catback on my 93 LT1 and have no drone... It's loud when I want it to be and as soon as I stop accelerating and shift to steady state it's quiet. I do not have drone issues, and it gets a lot of compliments....plus my down-shift pops that come out of the exhaust are nice!!!
I am considering one day going long tubes however *with cats*. I think the problem is if you go with a completely open exhaust from the manifolds to the tips (remember Corsa mufflers are basically straight pipes with a side chamber to reduce drone) you get standing waves that the mufflers cannot cancel out or are not tuned to cancel out...there may be variations with the "right" resonator or the crossover/x-pipe in the right spot might still work fine, but anecdotally on this forum I have read it several times that people have added cats back *specifically* because of the drone and it reduced or solved that problem.
