So I went to go check/change the fluid in the rear end on my 93 Dana 44, at least I’m guessing as it’s a 6 speed car. I noticed the fill plug was stripped out and it looks like whom ever changed it last used vice grips to remove and install the plug as it’s all chewed up around the edges.
I’ve been looking all over online at least trying to find a new one as I don’t like leaving things improper. Does anyone know where I could find a plug? I would have thought it would be simple but not looking so.
It probably is a standard (either English or metric) thread pattern, recessed (3/8 Allen) tapered thread plug. If you have it out, you could go match it up at a fastener supply store and/or find the thread pitch, etc. I did run against reports of Torx head ones.
Are the internal threads messed up, or just the threads on the plug itself ?
I'd think there's likely nothing wrong with yours other than it's had abuse on the outer diameter. Remove it and confirm the threads are fine in the housing and the plug. Try a correct hex in the plug and you can likely reuse. If there's a MOPAR dealer in the area a 4626710 or 4626710AB would be correct. Take it to any supply store and match the thread to available on the shelf.
Once you get your replacement, make sure you have a swivel tool or some kind of Allen wrench that can fit in the tight space so you don’t have to resort to the same!
The threads are fine on both plug and diff. Just the Allen key part was messed up. I ran that part number Deepa sent and it turns out Corvette Depot had 1 new plug remaining so I just ordered it. Shipping was more then the plug was worth but it saves me from driving around. I probably could have used the plug that’s there but I like things to be correct.
