targa top trim

Owned my '93 since 2004 so been there done a lot. Does the trim piece on the targa serve a purpose or is it just decorative? I'm prepping for it's first major paint job and need to resurface the top. I'm afraid I'll damage the new paint trying to put it back on but it really needs to come off for the job to be done correctly. Any advice? As far as putting it back on (it is still on) and/or leaving it off. Paint it to match? Any pictures either way?

I think the trim is there to protect the edges of the panel. I removed it to paint my '90 and reinstalled it without damaging the paint. I don't remember it being difficult.
