Default Low Coolant Warning

Good Evening,

New to me '87.
Have had her just over a week and I must say instant love and addiction.

Developed this symptom last week.

Low coolant warning came up on the panel. Immediately pulled over. Temp gauge was reading between 188 and 215 depending on traffic etc.
Let car cool down. Checked coolant over flow reservoir and it was normal. Checked radiator and it was normal.

The next day drove her to work about 5 miles and prompt came up again just as I was pulling into the parking structure. Temps were within the operating ranges I have read ion this forum.
Drove home no prompt.

This intermittent on/off of low coolant prompt continued.
This Saturday took her to car show (120mi round trip). Temps in N. Michigan were in the 90's. On the way there, no prompts. On the way back, warning came on a couple of times, save for the last 40mi when nothing came. Temps were normal. Fluids were normal.

Could it be a faulty sensor, and if so, How do I check it or could there be something else.

Thank you all for your insight.

John

Maybe just the connector to the sensor. It's (sensor) quite inexpensive so maybe you just change it and consider it 'maintenance'? The FSM likely has proper diagnostics.

Just went through this. Read a post here where a gent said it was he changed his thermostat and the problem went away. I thought that would not cause the problem. Mine was stuck open so I changed it, Solved mine too.

I went ahead an ordered one. Drove her to the store and back yesterday, Operating temps reached, no warnings....

I think that could also be an issue. Thank you. I will keep an eye on temps as the thermostat opens/closes...it could be sticking as you have said.

Just another thought, I just replaced my radiator cap on my '88 and my intermittent low coolant light stopped coming on...
