My 89 driverside headlight goes halfway up and stops power off closes. If the hood is opened fully the unit opens and closes perfectly. With the hood almost closed it works fine. Lock the hood it only goes halfway up. I'm stumped. Suggestions?
Something in the well under the headlights may be interfering with it. Look for hoses, harnesses, mis-mounted components that can get in the way of the rotation of the headlight assembly.
Since functionality is only being hampered when it's fully closed, I agree that it sounds like something in the well could have worked its way loose and is getting in the way. Here's some shots from our '86 that works with no issues for reference, in case it helps!
Took the headlight assembly out removed the motor and gear assembly. Found split plastic gear.
Boy oh boy, yeah, that'll do it! Glad you found the problem. Don't typically see quite that type of "wear" on these. If you're in need of a new one, we carry a bronze alternative for 88-96, otherwise at the moment I do not have an OE style nylon replacement available.
