Default Help with finding tires

Help with finding tires fir my 95 the previous owner had this set on it but tge rears and fronts are way different but all BF Goodrich. The rears are wider than the fronts and was told Goodrich doesn't carry that size anymore so now I have new Goodrich up front and will have to buy some replacement tires for tge rear, but all in that size are deemed race tires like Hoosier, Mickey,Thompson or Nitto. Ant one recommend a good street tire that will get good traction but not too soft, need good cornering too. I think the rims are off a c5 but not sure if any one knows that would be great.the tire size is in the pics.

We'll need to know your wheel sizes to be sure of proper sizes and give good reccomendations. I'm guessing you have 1996 Grand Sport wheels (or replicas?) that are 17x9.5 et56 front and 17x11 et50 in back? If so, then you need 275/40/17 tires for the front and 315/35/17 tires in back (the latter is what you show in the pics, which is why I'm guessing those are the wheels you have). For those sizes, my recommendations are: 1) the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 if you need to drive this car in very cold weather (much below 32F a lot, or ice/snow), or 2) the Mickey Thompson Street Comp if you won't drive it serious winter weather (Summit seems to keep them in stock). These particular M/Ts are true street tires, not race/drag tires. I would stay away from Nitto street tires (they have two in these sizes) and Toyo Extensas, as they aren't very good tires.

I disagree with Matthew's assessment of the Toyo Extensa's. I can't think of a reason to say they're bad tires, it's just that they're all seasons, not a summer tire or extreme performance. I have had mine on for a month or so now I don't have a single complaint, through rain and chilly temps. They have been surprisingly good for the price, even on a few slightly more spirited runs. I'm not going to autocross on them. For a 275/315 combo I wouldn't NOT recommend them if you aren't looking for extreme performance.

Just curious what you don't like about the 555 G2's as a street tire? I have a set that came on my car and have liked them more than I expected. Not a track tire, but good for a spirited daily commute.

RE the Extensas, compare them to the Michelin PS AS 4, which is also an all-season tire, and you'll understand why I say say they aren't very good tires. I mean, they'll hold the wheel rims off the ground, but the performance and quality aren't very good in comparison. I'll grant you they are a lot cheaper, so if you need a budget tire and performance and quality aren't big concerns, I guess you could consider them. Generally, though, people looking for 315/35/17 tires are hoping for some performance out of them, and the Michelin is leagues better in that department.

Nitto and Toyo are subsidiaries of the same company, and I would say much the same about the 555 G2 as I would the Extensa, except that it's a summer-only tire and it's not a very good bargain. You can get the M/T Street Comps for around the same price, or maybe less, and they will be better performing tires and probably better quality (search this forum for many people who experience out-of-round issues with this tire). Furthermore, I think that even in warm/dry conditions, the Micheline all-season will outperform the Nitto, and of course they will be vastly more appropriate in winter conditions (albeit at a higher price point). I see no good reason to spend good money on these Nittos.

I'm looking for a tire that'll stick without losing the cornering ability. My car is supercharged and I have a hard time taking off on the street as it is. My tires are due to be replaced and was shocked to hear they aren't made anymore. They performed very good until the right foot started getting heavy from forced inductionitis, a disease which affects old guys with vettes. I still like to hang an exit that says 30mph at 60 thus the needed cornering. But I don't want a drag only tire as they'll only last half a summer 😫

BTW, what's going on with your brake rotors? Is that rust or some crazy coating?

I can't see a date code on those tires, but don't think they've made those in a 315/35/17 for quite some time, so I'm assuming they're pretty old. In which case, any of the listed tires will be a significant upgrade in grip. For the cost and availability, I think you'd be hard to beat the MT's Matt mentioned. And if that's not enough grip you might need a lower tread wear tire, but that's not going to last well on the street or like rain/winter.

I have Continental Extreme contact Sport and I think my next set will be the Michelin Pilot sport all season 4. I have a 96 base. Dan

The brakes are just coated calipers and little condensation rust on the rotors, cars been sitting for months. Tires are old that's why I'm replacing them, only good for doing burnouts now. Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately, those aren't made in the OP's rear size. There aren't many options for him, and I think we've named them all save for the competition/track-oriented tires that aren't realistic for street use.

OP, given that you have high power and like to launch as well as corner hard, I think the M/T Street Comp is the best true street tire for your wheel sizes. You could consider the Nitto NT01, which would provide more grip. However, it's a UTQG 100 tire that is meant for track use and it won't last very long. And although the Street Comp won't be awesome in the rain or cold, the NT01 would be even worse. So it's a pretty extreme solution. I just didn't want to leave it out of the conversation since you seem to lean pretty hard on your tires.
