Hey all, recently purchased my first Corvette: 1987 with 21k. It is a great car but my OD button on the shift **** is broken. The OD does work automatically but is troublesome at times. I'm not particularly mechanically inclined but enjoy learning new things. Would this be an easy fix or would I be over my head doing this myself? Thanks in advance, glad to be here.
Sharp ride you got. First C4 Ive seen where the body kit looks good.
Stance, vert wheels/tires make it. Youll get your answer here, lots of sharp guys with these 4 plus 3s .

What do you mean by troublesome? Does it not activate overdrive sometimes even though you are expecting it to? And the button being broken… is it physically broken or broken as in it doesn’t turn overdrive on/off when you select it

Sorry should have been more specific. It will always activate when shifting up to 2nd and stay on for duration of trip other than when shifting into 1st. If I am heavy on the accelerator into 2nd it will not come on, nor will it come on in 3rd but will always come back on in 2nd or 4th. Quick acceleration will turn it off in any gear (I know this is how it is designed) I had some trouble early on when OD was off in 3rd and downshifting into 2nd to take a side street and OD would active and drop rpms unexpectedly, causing me to occasionally stall. Interestingly enough when this would happen the OD would never come back on when I restarted the car in any gear, unless I put it in N and turned the key off for approx 10-15 seconds then back on then it would work as before. Also the button is physically broken, as in held down by scotch tape :O

Suggestion for you, besides f
replacing and fixing the button :P the overdrive relay (located by the break master cylinder, next to the fuel pump relay) will more than likely have the insulation pulled back and bare wire exposed near the relay harness connector. Very common issue as the insulation was just barely long enough from the factory, and after so many years of the wires moving around that insulation tends to not be long enough anymore. This can cause strange overdrive issues if the wires touch while driving, so I’d suggest adding insulation like by wrapping the exposed ends in electrical tape to prevent them from touching.
Also if you haven’t already, I’d replace the overdrive trans fluid as the fluid in there will give you an idea of the condition of your overdrive unit.

if you apply more than 65% throttle when first driving it will disable the OD until top of 4th. a click of the button turns off/on the computer control of the OD. take the button and tape off, its just a cover, the actual switch is down under the shifter. there is a thin T shaped rod that screws into the switch from inside the ****. just click that with your thumb. there are new plastic buttons available for about 30-40 bucks they just clip into place as long as the **** itself isnt damaged.
i should also mention ive been driving my vette for 3 years with no button, i still press that switch a 100 times every time i drive it, i have a good one but one of the tabs is broken inside my **** and it doesnt stay put. alignment tech didnt know how it worked and tried to jam on the button to get it out of reverse...
this is a diagram and how to for replacing the overdrive switch,
I fixed mine when the wire to the switch broke at the solder point and i just had to re-solder it then i taped the wire itself to the shifter so the wire itself would flex rather than just the connection point
