Hello, Did anyone out there have this problem. I have a 1996 LT1 that when starting, the engine turns over fine but it will take a number of turns before starting up. I changed the fuel pump (twice, thinking the first was damaged) along with a new pulsator and pump filter. This did not do the trick. Could it be a pulsator, fuel filter, or timing issue. Those are the only things I can think of. Anyone have any suggestions. Thanks. Rick
First you need to to isolate fuel VS spark. With starting problems.
(1) Grab your trusty timing light clamp the P.U. around 1 wire. each bank. You should see the strob light pulse.
(2) now your handy fuel pressure gauge.
Validate 43 - 45lbs on the rail.
Response back with your current results. To allow narrowing down. Stubborn no start.
In zumps case. like myself with a performance FP. The check valve is an option. Not really required.
This forces you to only start exactly at prime.
The pressure will drop immediately. Will not start.
Til next KO/ prime.
Actually a nice theft deterrent.
My 96 Vert began to have long crank starting out of the blue. It would start if I held the gas pedal to the floor. I checked my fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose and it was full of gas. I replaced the FPR and starts great again.
One thing I didn't mention is when all this was going on with the starting up issue, I woke up one morning with strong gasoline fumes in the house. After checking around and finding out that it came from the garage, I looked at the vet engine and on the floor underneath. No evidence of gas in either places. Can anyone tell me if the fumes could possibly be tied in with the fuel pressure regulator or could it be another issue.
