I was wondering what exactly the sunload sensor does that sits on the middle dash. Mine has lost the plastic "dome" that sits over the sensor, and I am wondering if this impairs what it does. If so, can I cobble something together to cover the sensor that will make it do what it was designed to do (assuming the sensor still works. Of course, not knowing what it does, I don't even know how to test if it's working! Any advice on how to test it's function?

The HVAC controller uses the sun load to calculate the amount of heat being generated by the sun. It uses that info as part of the compressor duty cycle calculation. You'll get an error if it's not there, but I doubt the dome will effect much.
