So I'm slowly knocking out repairs on the fix list for the 89, and I have the Delco-Bose radio, broken antenna (two lower sections there) and the speakers have a whiring, buzzy, crackly, picks up backfeed from the distributor I think, and the volume **** has to be turned passed the 12 o'clock position to hear any sound and the louder the backfeed gets. The same results when a cassette is playing. Is the volume control bad? Seems to worsen the longer it's on and area I'm in as well.
Sounds like the amps in the speakers are toast. Very common problem with them. They are repairable. Search on here and you'll get some ideas as to cost and also a way to repair them yourself if you are handy with electronics.
Thanks for the reply. It appears to be costly for each amp, and I usually do not have the radio on anyways, (I enjoy the sound of the car more). I am leary with repairing 34 yrs old radio equipment, but do like for everything to operate. Would the aftermarket products be a better choice?
Thanks, Mike
I replaced everything in my 89 convertible, but I went with a period correct aftermarket radio.
6"x9" speakers were a drop in replacement for the rears (if you have a coupe I am not sure), but the front door speakers required a little modification.
6 1/2" speakers fit if you slightly trim the opening in the door.
You will have to make a spacer for the stock grills depending on the depth of the tweeters.
I would recommend running new speaker wire from the radio to the speakers as well.
IIRC the total cost was < $400 for everything.
I too have an 89 convertable, rear speakers online show a rear corner mount speaker, where the convertible is flat and the rear deck as you know. Would like to keep the original head but change the speakers, but I'm reading the radio has no built-in amp?

That correct they need those amp to perform, when I had my 89, first thing I did was update the radio to CD, and then replaced speakers in all 4 positions.

Yes, you would need to either replace the factory radio or install an aftermarket amplifier if you are keeping the stock HU and just replacing the speakers.

Look on ebay. Very cheap repair that includes shipping.
