As far as what I've read and videos I've seen, yes, the veins on the early wheels are designed to draw air air in to cool the brakes. The saw blade wheels that started in '91 are the opposite. They are designed to draw air out from the brakes and the "veins" point the other way. Same effect, I guess, just air going the other way.
EDIT: Actually, I think the '88 to '90 salad shooters were designed for the same purpose, but I don't remember which direction they go.

Gross. It's VANES, not veins. If your Corvette has gotten veiny, you've either stroked it too far or you're too focused on handling.
What a great contribution to this thread, very insightful, very informative and extremely helpful....Actually, it was none of these! Ironically, the only thing GROSS, is that in your effort to insult someone's intelligence, you went with a play on words suggestive of a male erection and masturbation!!! You've been a forum member for over 10 years with a grand total of 42 posts, I've read them all. Based on your ideas, vocabulary, writing style and computer skills, I would assume that you have above average intelligence! Perhaps, simply contributing to this thread with something useful, you would've had the opportunity to use and the spell the word "vanes" correctly without bringing any direct attention to it. By doing so, it's possible that some us, either consciously or subconsciously would've realized the correct spelling and followed your lead! VEINS from being stroked too far, VANES in the wheels....It's too bad this post will likely be perceived as VAIN! We're supposed to be here for help, helping and bouncing ideas off of each other....not spelling lessons and English class....if you know what someone "means" in a discussion, but they've misspelled a word, it seems very petty to fixate on it, not to mention....very counterproductive!!!

In appreciation of the time '78CorvetteS.A. spent writing that out--and mainly in appreciation of his deft furtherment of the pun--here is an outtake from the book Corvette From A to Z-51 that establishes the orientation of the first turbine wheels.
You guys bust me up. Its funny as hell. I am woking on a 40 year old junk c4 that was given to me and spending thousands of $$ on it. Do you think i have any brains. Spelling is the least of my problems.
