Talk about all over the map...
I know here in the northwest Kelley Blue book is the king. I know there's others nada and so forth. Of course even my haggerty's club has a value link as well. That one seemed quite high. Then I wonder about people's emotional attachment to their car? Then there's what they bought it for what they put into it... What year it is what features it has and stuff like that.,
Nonetheless all over the map...
I know people sell cars with the motions but I'm more of buying cars with money lol... If it doesn't Blue book out how do I justify it?...
I appreciate everybody's opinion on the subject...
Blue book is a joke and has had no relevance for 3 years now in general. It never was very good on things that weren't standard depreciation curve (it works for corollas and civics and appliances cars, les so for sports cars and toys).
Hagerty offers pricing, but really there is a huge spread in values because they made the c4 over a decade. An 84 auto vs a 96 stick are two totally different pricing levels, separated by probably 10 grand.
My advice is to figure out your budget and wish list and see how much of the two line up.
Of course I asked all this is most know I came on the forum because looking to learn about the cars and I am in the market. Again seeing things all over the place. Self-proclaimed pristine early 90s for 7K and some for anywhere from 10.5 to 15...
I know for myself when I'm looking at a car I give it every benefit of the doubt when I punch it in. I put in every single option absolutely zero is wrong with it the true mileage the color blah blah blah and at full retail dealer sold value...
Seems that there are trends at what these cars sell for...
I know from my personal cars I'm pretty damn attached to them and like my power wagon that I restored someone would have to make me a ridiculous offer... But if I wanted to sell it I would have to get real with myself... I've got 25k into just parts and probably 1500 hours labor.. 10 bucks an hour for labor? There's no way in heck I could get 40K for that truck let alone the 25 that I put into it...
I don't know I guess what I'm getting that is where does reality cross emotion...
I would suggest going to an aggregate site like AutoTempest which pulls from a variety of for sale sites, you could get a good feel for the going asking prices for specifically what you want (year, miles, trans, etc). Past that I have not found NADA, KBB, Hagerty, Edumnds etc. to be very accurate at all, Good Luck.....

Yes this is what I'm thinking.. I'm just trying to get away from paying for someone's emotional attachment and I am not in the habit of low balling people either. Just what's fair...
Do you have a list of what are must haves and wants? Also, if you don't want anything over a certain mileage or colors that don't work. I follow the market pretty closely and might be able to give you a ball park value for what I see out there. It's kind of my hobby to search for good deals and I'm always looking at several sites daily and seeing what's out there. As I also live in the northwest, I'm pretty familiar with local pricing.
The C4s are definitely appreciating right now. There is a big price difference between low mileage cars. By low mileage I mean 30k or less. People with 89,000 miles try to price their car for the same they see a 30k mile car. If you want a good deal get a well taken care of car that has 130k+. Get a seller that has put 100s of hours and $10k+ that has had it listed for over a month.
I personally feel the bang for the buck is in the 92-94 6 speeds right now. The high mileage ones go for $6-8k. Less if they have issues and are easy to wrench on.

I appreciate the offer and I don't mind giving my idea of what I want. Maybe what I don't want would be a little easier.
No 84s and no 85 with crossfire injection. No convertibles and no yellow and no red if possible definitely not yellow. Good working air conditioning. Would prefer one or two owner adult and well taken care of. I would like to keep it very close to 10 grand or under. Maybe I'm asking too much or maybe I just got to keep looking. But if you see anything I'd appreciate it...

So are you ok with auto or manual and is there a mileage point you want to stay under? It won't be that difficult to find a nice auto trans in your price range but a 6 speed with lower miles might take some searching and the ability to jump quickly if one does pop up. I'll keep my eyes open for sure. If you want, PM me a phone or email that I can get your attention quickly with in case something really good shows up.

Thank you again! I just posted something about a thrill Ride that I just took trying one out. I almost you know in the long run would like the automatic just so I can put it in gear and drive around. I did drive the 89 stick shift today and I liked it but I believe I'm going to just like an automatic probably better. I'd like it to have a few miles as possible but I'm realistic in the 75 to 125 range... Mostly long as it's just kept up well and not gushing oil out onto the street. Or making any banging or ticking and knocking noises... And not to worry about getting a hold of me right away I just get a email when someone responds to this thread anyways and go straight to my phone...
The difference between the 6 speed and auto is pretty big. The majority of the autos got a 2.59 rear axle ratio. That leaves a lot of acceleration to be desired off the line. There's an optional 3.07 rear for the autos but that gives a higher rpm if you just want to cruise on the freeway. I had a 89 auto with 2.59s. it cruised around 1750 rpm on the freeway doing 65-70. My buddy has an 89 auto with 3.07s and it is around 2200 rpm doing 65-70.
With the 6 speed you get a 3.33 or 3.45 rear axle. The combined first gear in the 6 speed is actually pretty close to the combined gear ratio of the auto with a 3.07 as the auto trans has a steeper first than the 6 speed. The o/d in the 6 speed is a lot more than the auto. So my 92 6 speed with 3.45 rear end gears does 1650 rpm at 65. I'm at 1800 doing 80. With so much o/d in the 6 speed you pick up more mile per hour for less rpms than the auto.
I really enjoy driving my 6 speed. It's a lot faster than the 89 auto and gets better mpg. I averaged 27 mpg doing 80 on a road trip.

I'm in the Northeast and spent five months last March to July looking for a C4 with 15K as my highwater mark for price. Unlike you I did narrow down what I wanted but ended up with a little different than I wanted. I looked at OR saw advertised several that fit my criteria. 1990 white/red six speed coupe 52K $15,000, 1991 White/red 6 speed coupe 22K $12,000, 1994 Yellow/black 6 speed coupe 57k $14K, 1996 collector silver/black 6 speed coupe LT4 50K $15,000, 1990 Polo Green/saddle 6 speed coupe 70k $9,500 and the car I bought 1993 40TH Ruby Red/Ruby Red 6 speed coupe asked $11,950 gave $11,900. If you are looking at not taking a loss I suggest moving on. These cars are all 27-41 years old and will need something no matter how perfect and I'd say it's easier to buy one than to sell one. Just by looking at Craigslist and Facebook marketplace over a two-three month period focusing on C4's that appeal to you will tell you where the market is....
