My 95 supercharged engine blew headgaskets and at the same time time had 2 cylinders missing and small water hose going to throttlebody and small hose leak at water pump. I was running about 140 mph and all hell let loose. Upon removing engine, I know I'm changing the water pump due to age, but found the stock opti has corrosion in the cap wire terminals and the rotor was slightly corroded but was still starting. The wires to the cylinders were turned to a white powder on the wire side and the opti terminal. Should I buy a complete msd opti with the wires for 700 bucks or run the stock opti with a new cap rotor and wire set, msd is what my ignition control box and coil and wires were. Should I send my stock opti to get rebuilt, or can I check if it's good to go with the parts I mentioned. The engine is at the machine shop for a while, also looking for a complete cooling hose kit and good quality water pump. Now that the engines out I want to change all the rubber hoses. I'm far from a parts store so running back and forth is no good, I need the orings for the rear tube that goes from head to head and tees to the throttle body and so far can't find them or the little 90 deg hose from the rear tube to the throttle body. I never want to do this again so looking for best advice. Thanks
Search the forums on optis, lots of threads and opinions on optis. Don’t buy the MSD unit, you don’t get what you pay for. I would suggest a Petris unit (I have a recent thread where I replaced mine with a Petris with vacuum retrofit which should be done for 92-94).
Nobody rebuilds them anymore (at least nobody you can send them to).
If yours is fine on the inside and has a Mitsubishi sensor, you could do just cap and rotor…inspect carefully…
