Hi guys, i have a 1984 Corvette. Z51/auto. 46000 miles and my issue is this. After a long drive i get home and park it, but if i go out say 10 or 15 min later it will start for a second and then die, you restart it, it starts then dies etc. If i give it some gas i can keep it running however. It starts up just fine cold, but why would this be? I have done a complete tune up on it, wires, plugs, new cap and rotor, coil, ICM. Im just kind of baffled with this, other than this issue it runs great. I do have a FSM and started combing through there. Thanks for any help and suggestions.
I cant find the video right this minute but this fella had a no-start when hot situation too. As i recall he replaced the FPR and it went away. At any rate, he has several helpful C4 videos. https://m.youtube.com/@mycorvettelife/videos
I was actually thinking the same thing. It was the one where he thought he had it sold but then the problem happened and how to fix.
The most common driveability problem with CFI, in my experience, is low fuel pressure. It was marginal from the factory...doesn't usually get better with time. So I'd start by checking that first.
Hey guys, so i got home from work and was going to take the corvette out for a run. I started it up and it idled for about a minute then died. It wouldnt restart. It would only crank but not fire. I went through my FSM and was knocking things off the list and went to check spark. There was no spark. So i pulled the distributer cap off and these pics are what i found. What would cause this? These are replacement GM parts i got from rockauto last summer. Not sure if this was the issue with hot start but it definitely caused my car to die today. Should i buy the GM coil again? NGK?
Hey Tom, when initally took the cap off i saw the broken off rotor bushing laying on top of the rotor. i knew there were issues at that point, then i take the top off the coil and i see what you see here. Red wire burned and charred up. Is this just a coil malfunction?? Like i said i bought it at Rockauto last summer, it doesnt even have that many miles on it. It was genuine GM
It seems like it's either high resistance in the wire (poorly connected to the primary winding), or low resistance in the primary winding of the coil. 1. seems more likely to me. Bad parts.
Kinda what i thought, i have the original factory coil i replaced, nothing wrong with it and it looks brand new. I may just stick that back in there. I have a gut feeling it is more reliable than most new parts today.
