Default ‘88-‘91 AC Compressor Bracket Woes

If you have had a broken AC bracket on your ‘88-‘91, please share your experience. Where it broke, how you suspected it was broken, etc. Did a search, not much. I think mine might be broken but difficult to see. Really hate the design. A lot. 1 of 3 things I dislike about my ‘89. Others being less than 300 hp and reverse thread power steering cap. Otherwise, ‘89 vert ZF6 is my favorite C4.

A fourth thing. The horrible y-pipe exhaust system. Already ditched that for an LT style system, much better.

Where did it break? What were the symptoms? Mine shakes like crazy when I turn the air on. But seems solid when I try to shake it by hand. I bet if I remove the belt it might be loose. And my tensioner is in a place not easy to access with belt tool. I think my belt is stretched.

I also recommend that you check to ensure that you have this bracket and bolts in place when you reassemble. These were added by GM to strengthen that whole A/C bracket area and I have seen them left off by mistake or mounted incorrectly before. If you were the one taking it apart you would not make that mistake, but dealers or shops often do.

A video that I did years ago detailing all the braces on the front of the engine on my 1991 l98 coupe. I think every single one of them was missing, and they are critically important to prevent bracket breaking. Bought them from a corvette salvage yard, but did fab up the alternator brace myself.

Thank you both. I’ll check for all braces. I for sure that I have at least one. Will check them all. I’ll take the oil slinging ‘87 pancake over this bracket nonsense any day.

Update: All braces in place and no visible cracks. I installed a new reproduction tensioner and belt today and all is well. Possible stretched belt and/ or weak tensioner spring.
