I always thought of that stuff as a blessing and a curse.
On one hand, it protects the surface from direct dings and gives some sound deadening properties.
But it can also hide water and other contaminants that slip in the tiny crevices and cracks. And holds them tight up against it and hides the damage until the coating just falls off.
