Has anyone purchased a C4 Pilot Car? I'm a bit unsure as to how they were treated by GM during testing. Any input would be helpful. Thanks!
My '96 Grand Sport (007, hence the name) was a Pilot Car. It was shipped to MI for quality reviews and then went to an Exec to drive around for a year, after which I picked it up. Mechanically it was fine but it had road rash on the nose and rockers. With 30k+ miles on it when I got it, it had certainly been driven. GS #005 was another Pilot Car I saw in person after it became privately owned and it was pristine. It was the GS in the 1996 sales brochure. Number 002 as I recall was scrapped. Point being, there's a wide range of outcomes and not a one-size-fits-all answer.
Best bet is to look at the condition of the car and assess as appropriate. The youngest C4 Pilot Car is going to be nearly 29 years old with the oldest being ~40 years old so if there are issues, they've long since been addressed. At this point it's more about cosmetics
I don't know about other pilot cars, but I do know that all but one of the original 1983 Corvette pilot cars were destroyed. The sole remaining example is at the NCM.
