I believe in earlier C4's, this was the battery box behind the driver's seat. Seeing as brake lines dive into this cover, I suspect that the ABS controller is under this cover. Anybody ever remove it?

You get access to that by opening your storage door behind the drivers seat , remove the tray then the insulation piece. At least in my 86 It is the ABS pump inside.

You are trying to get rid of the box?

To my knowledge, the battery was never behind the seat in a C4. It's your ABS unit.

From 84-96, the battery has always been in the same location in the left rear of the engine bay behind the left front fender panel. The ABS pump is in the left storage bin. ABS was introduced in 1986 and Chevrolet has kept it simple by installing the pump in the same location through 96. In regards to that plate being bolted in that manner, I can't answer that question with a definitive answer. My thought was that it allows the pump assembly to be installed from the bottom of the car during assembly and Chevrolet found that it was the best installation practice on the assembly line. Just a wild guess though.

My BIL has a 76 C3. His battery is in that spot, behind the driver. Ive always assumed thst was the stock location. Maybe that what youre remembering.

Only the C 3’s had the battery behind the seats. The C4 is drivers side front fender
