Default CAGS Eliminator not working

So i was working on installing those fake harnesses they sell online onto the plugs on the side of the transmission. The one that's unfortunately deep into the underside the car. took a while to get them hooked up but i did both ends and zip tied them snug.

I understand that the light on the dashboard will still light, which I'm fine with. What I'm not fine with is the fact that it didn't change anything at all, and it still wants to force me into fourth gear. I don't understand how such a simple project can go wrong, and I've done an entire optispark job and replaced all the steel brake pipes from the ABS to the rest of the car. I'm quite frustrated because it grinds my poor gears whenever it wants me to skip shift. Literally any other time, all 6 gears shift as smooth as you'd expect.

Has anyone else had this problem?

To add to this, no I didn't hook it up to the reverse lockout because that solenoid was too easy to spot--and I can still reverse just fine.

I just unplugged mine and left it hanging.

Try that real quick?

Might be an issue with the Chinese adapter harness?

I bought a cheap chinese adapter harness that is intended to help TPS voltage reading and adjustment and it was straight up wired incorrectly...

There is no electric reverse lockout. Just reverse light.

As suggested try it with the harness just unplugged. The plug kit is just designed to seal off the terminals and not allow water intrusion.

I'll give that a try, i suppose it is possible those harnesses might be messing with things --is there a reason why it would still be doing that when the two wires are separated? How can they still communicate?

Lol this is why I think chump and I are suggesting trying it unplugged. Unplugged there should be no way to activate the CAGS solenoid short of telekinesis or kV electrical potentials and plasma arcs lol.

My curious hypothesis informed by my recent experience with the defective cheap chinese TPS tester harness is that your CAGS "eliminator" harness was built by some Chinese wiring factory that literally just made a jumper section.... even though the US vendor specified a harness that results in an open circuit. Imagine being some Chinese OEM engineer looking at a drawing for the harness and thinking "wait this just leaves the circuit open, this must be a mistake we will fix it for them!" Then changing the circuit of the harness to actually close and just act as a jumper.

Then you install the product and well...

Haha but this is all just conjecture!! It very well could just be magic at work

Good luck!

I just unplugged mine on my 1989 and on my 1991 i actually removed the solenoid entirely from the transmission case and installed a plug with specs that can be found on the forum with a search..

So i removed the harness and left it unplugged and still does the same thing...light goes on and forces me into fourth. I cannot fathom how this is a thing unless its the other plug closer to the ground...but everyone says its the one closer to the top on the drivers side

High on the driver side is the B/U light switch. The CAGS is the other on the transmission main case, a large cylindrical device that if it's not been modified the connector is on a small bracket. This thread has an image of the CAGS (removed from the transmission). That is what you only need to disconnect.

You are disconnecting the reverse light switch. The CAGS solenoid is the bottom one

oh my god...it was easier than i thought it was.

that's the last time i trust the instructions from an eBay listing as well as youtube tutorials. thank you for clarifying it for me--it works perfectly and now my tranny wont grind up trying to fight me

took a lot of work getting that reverse plug back in. Zip tied that solenoid and we're all good. Thank you for the help everyone.
