Re: Gm has my key code but not the Vats/PASS code (Glasman66)
I don't think it matters what the code is, doesn't the CAR store it? When I got my PKE I just followed the directions to program it. It took about 5 mins.
Re: Gm has my key code but not the Vats/PASS code (Glasman66)
If my recollection serves me correctly (which it often does not) you can plug a scanner into the ALDL and scan it for the correct code. Unfortunately, it's a matter of trying all 13 key blanks while scanning. Your dealer should know what to do. (The service guy. Not the parts counter guy.)

Actually the part on the key is a resistor, not a capacitor
:iagree:
You can get at the vats resistor input under the dash -you can then use a regular resistor of the correct value from radio shack (they are cheap, if you can find out all 13 possibilities). Then try thrm one by one, but you'll have to wait until VATS is done locking you out until you try the next one.
Re: Gm has my key code but not the Vats/PASS code (Glasman66)
Off the cuff . . .
Take the steering wheel and lock cylinder off, get 2 aligator clip jumper leads and 13 resistors from Radio Shack (about $1 a pack), and try each one while trying to crank the starter using a scredriver where the lock cylinder used to be. Be sure to wait 10 minutes between each crank attempt. (There's a chart listing the resiting values for each of the VATS resistor codes here on the forum someplace.)
Alternatively, get a key made (with VATS code 1), gets a VATS bypass kit (with VATS code 2), and 11 resistors for VATS codes 3 through 13. If 1 and 2 doesn't work, begin swapping out the resistor in the VATS bypass kit. This will save you from removing the steering wheel, but you'll have to wait for the VATS bypass kit to be Fed Exed to you by MAD or Eckler's.
