What is the "Normal" operating temperature for a tranny, in stop and go traffic on a hot Texas day? I just had my tranny rebuilt a few months ago, and got in a traffic jam today. The temp went as far as 219F. Once on the open road, it went down to 206F. I rolled into town after an hour drive, and it dropped to 197F. I just finished installing an entire new cooling system, with a 3 row aluminum radiator, and 165F Thermastat. I even reprogrammed the cooling fans. Should I be concerned? Do I also have to adjust the fans for the tranny? Thanks
Just had my 4L60 rebuilt not cheap ,at 220 the trans fluid burns ,first thing I would do is get the trans fluid away from the radiator if the coolant is around 200 + no way the trans is going to be any cooler it's all in the sane place the radiator. I would it's a little work put in a trans cooler in front of the radiator this should allow the trans to be independent of the rotator heat .. The corvette book says 180 is the best temp for the old C-4 trans to be running at ,between 180-200 should be Ok for a few years but if want it to last for a longer time I would cool it down with a trans cooler away from the raditor .. This is not for everybody I got with my labor $4500.00 this new trans trying to ensure it has a long life .. I got a trans cooling radiator I send ya if just pay for shipping . Pm me for details
Nice install, I was actually considering that exact same solution. Plenty of space without the spare tire. But the car's coolant was running at about 170-195F the whole day. Which raised some concerns.

I installed one of these I figure the rebuilt trans with my labor is about half the value of the 93, I didn't want to be guessing on what was going on with it, last year the temp where I live was 100% for a month or two so am getting ready for the heat wave if it comes again ,removing and installing this trans was a lot of work not including just trying to find something that would even rebuild MY trans ,phone calls , people saying sure will call back never did this happen over and over most tried to sell me one I said : No It's got to my trans 93 Corvettes trans some so-called trans people didn't get it ,if the so-called trans people don't get that off the list NOT trans people ,these Corvette trans are pacific to the Corvette it's in . Just an FYI
I found that out when I was looking for a donor to build the new tranny. Instead, my local GM "has a guy" that rebuilds them. So I bought everything to make it handle up to around 475, and after about 2yrs of research, I managed to get everything I needed. Plus a little more, though my only regret is not swapping out the 4 pinion to a 5 pinion. I went with a stock TC, only because my car didn't like none of the aftermarkets I put in. For now, I went with a Hayden 698. I would've loved having that cooler mounted back there. Too bad this inflation is kicking my ***, to buy one lol.
93 with BeCool radiator and old B&M stacked cooler in front of Radiator, 160 stat, both fans on 185. I run 170-190 in traffic/city driving. Car water temp 180-195. 2800 stall, 3.73 gears with a stroker motor.
