Default Search Function - C4 - ABS

Much like a couple of other Forums I'm on (Harley & Toyota) I find the search function leaving a lot to be desired.
I have a 1996 (C4) and am having brake issues that I am continuing to assess and address. I've done most everything except achieve a proper bleed and get a firm pedal. Everyone who has responded here and on other forums, seem to point to trapped air or malfunctioning ABS to allow the air to be bled. Over the weekend and early next week I will try to activate the ABS on a gravel road (I don't have a programmer that will operate the ABS) and bleed again to see if I get any improvement. If I don't get results my next step is to eliminate the ABS.
I know there are members who have done this and I'd like feedback, as to what fitting, kits, or method used for the tubing (hardware), then I need to know how to disable the controller, in a manner that it will not throw alarms or codes.
Thanks for any feedback in advance. Pictures of yours (elimination) or links to any plug and play kit would be greatly appreciated. If I can find the fittings it looks as simple as a tee for the Front MC tubing (smaller) and LF & RF, as well as a tee for the Rear MC tubing (Larger) and LR & RR. I'm also assuming the proprtioning vale is upstream of the ABS system.

I think ABS is a very nice thing to have. If mine acted up on my 96 I would have my unit professionally cleaned out, o-rings changed, rebuilt and tested. I certainly would not delete it. Dan

When I was having a problem on my 96 sometime ago, it turned out to be the ETCBM module that had failed, as per the troubleshooting in the FSM. I found a used one on eBay about 10 years ago, and my brakes, ABS and TC have worked fine since.

I wanted to troubleshoot the module, having a degree in electronics, but when I opened it up, it had some type of conformal coating on the board to protect it against moisture, which would have made troubleshooting a complete PITA.

I think my biggest concern as our C4s get older is that finding the various electronic modules is going to get harder and harder to do.

I also worry about this. I wonder if anyone knows how many C4's are still on the road. I do think that if there is enough demand with people willing to pay high prices that someone would jump in. Dan

Just a quick break down...

Round numbers, 360,000 C4's made between 84-96.
91,000 of those are 84-85 with No ABS and very little electronic components
115,000 86-89 cars with ABS and very little other electronic components
151,000 90-96 cars with ABS and more electronic components

As you can see just grouping it into these three categories brings in an smaller quantity of parts. Some crossover from the early generation some do not. It is tough for a vendor to make 1 part that covers 84-96 much less one that covers a smaller break down.

Out of those 360,000 C4's just in my small portion of the world at a local small junkyard, they currently have at least 100 C4's in stock. They crush several a month to dispose of to make room for the new C4's. Of those they crush, not all parts are taken out and sold. I wish I had space for certain items to hold onto or even the money to do it.

Didn't even have the same fender screws, much less ABS etc. If I saw that many C4s in one yard I'd probably pass out. Then again buying an ABS module off one might be no better than what I already have.

If I owned that scrap yard a C4 would have to be pretty stripped clean before I crushed it. Dan PS: maybe you should post the name of that scrap yard.

Let me know before you absolutely give up. I have an ABS out of a 96 I parted out a few months ago. I’d be more than happy to open it up and check everything.

Thanks.
Just looking at the picture, mine is configured differently. Mine has the 10mm x 1 fitting for the rear from the MC and two smaller (haven't sized yet) i think 8mm going to the LR anf RR, and the front MC line and LF & RF all inline. So 2 rows of 3 fittings each.

I’ll double check, I parted out a 94 and 96 back to back. That one one is probably the 94 unit.

Just got the car back from the shop and the brakes are not perfect but they are better. I suspect there may be come trash or the slightest bit of air remaining, but it's drivable brakewise.
Thanks. Now onto the next few issues.

Started another thread, however I'll throw this out. Can someone take a picture of their wiper blades or better have a part #. I bought blades and they are too tall to go under the hood.

You should try to activate the ABS whenever you can. You don't have to be going fast. This will flush the ABS unit much like the tech. Dan
