Is $15k too much?

It’s getting a ppi tomorrow and if it comes back with good news I’m going to get it. He won’t come down on price at all but we’ll see where the ppi puts us.
thanks everyone for the input. I think I’d rather pay $15k for a perfect car that’s imacculately maintained than a $12k car I have to worry about constantly or fix.

P.S. I Wouldn't come down on the price of that car either.

Safety Car
I daily drove one for ten years from 2000-2010, and while it was a good car it needed work, more than the average used car. The common issues are well documented here. Buying one like this minimizes the chances of big problems, but they all need work sooner or later. It's a 35 year old GM car full of 35 year old plastic and '80's electronics. Anybody buying one should understand that going in. For some people, keeping them on the road is half the fun.

These days, I feel that, all of us....really need to consider and value the condition of the paint more! Many C4s like this one, have a paint job that is worth half to just about as much, and sometimes more than price of the whole car...especially if it's the factory applied variety!!!! These days, just quality supplies to paint a car from start to finish can cost $4k-$8 and more...no labor included (my uncle just did his '66 Nova SS, Aztec Bronze a year ago...$6k...just supplies)! Yes, even low mileage cars are going to need bushings and other consumables, likely sooner than later....But, I feel the paint and interior are worth the asking price, the rest is free, if you really think about it! I've come to the conclusion that unless you leave them basically stock...and even then, the vast majority all end up having a total price tag of $20k-$30+! Upgrade/recondition brakes, suspension, engine, transmission, cooling system, electronics, fuel system, interior, wheels, tires, rear differential, glass, radio, tops, lighting system, add-ons, exhaust system, etc, and sometimes paint...so, many times it doesn't matter what car you start with, to get it the way you want it, all adds up to the same general price range...and this is assuming you do most of the labor yourself!!! Buying one in this condition, is money well spent and will contribute to a cheaper bottom line in the end, IMHO! Let's all consider that there are Ford Focus's out there with $50k price tags these days👍

Beware of paying a premium for a low-mileage car if you intend to drive it much.
If you do, every mile you put on it removes a disproportionate amount of its value.
I've make that mistake, as have my sons, and it ends up just KILLING you to drive it at all.

i’m looking at buying this near perfect condition 1989 c4 automatic transmission with base suspension with only 45,000 miles on it. Buying from second owner and it is in immmaculate condition. Runs and drives flawlessly and almost everything is originals. A few upgrades including headlights, stereo deck (bluetooth/usb), backup camera, and water pump. Comes with all original parts for those as well.

I don't really care about this. I think the low mileage is more of a testament to how the car was taken care of and does help with the value but let's say I keep the car for 5 years and put 25,000 miles on it. So it will have 70k miles on it 2029.....what's the worst that that would do to the value? Take off a few grand? I'm not worried about it.

There's never gonna be any meaingful value in these cars. A ZR-1 is the likely exception, but anything else is, in my view, expendable.
As far as the cost, you're either gonna pay it up front or you're gonna pay it on the back end when you have to restore.
Either way you're gonna pay around the same.
And either way you're probably always gonna be working on it anyway.

Alright everyone, I got the PPI and the mechanic said he hasn’t seen a C4 that clean for a long long time. He said all normal wearables are in great shape and the two issues he sees are a minimal rear main seal leak and a small air intake manifold leak.
Looks like the rear main is an expensive job, any ideas about the intake manifolds?

Regarding the intake, is the leak air or oil? My 1988 and 1989 were purchased used and both had a rear intake oil leak. Pretty common. Did the work myself and installed new injectors designed for ethanol gasoline while it was all apart. A local shop wanted $600, so I saved $400. My 1989 had no rear main oil leak, but the 1988 did with an occasional drip. Switched to high mileage oil that contains extra seal conditioners. Did this oil help? Not sure, but it never got worse over the 10 years of ownership. You may find that starting the engine when cold is not immediate. That is by design. Starting in 1989, GM increased the crank time to increase oil pressure before it starts.
