Default Safelite windshield

I removed my windshield to fix some rust on the windshield frame and damaged it in the process. So I need to get it replaced.

Just wanted to check and see if anyone has any experience with having their windshield replaced by Safelite or equivalent. My windshield frame is bare paint at the moment. I'm particularly interested in whether or not there is any special seal or anything required that Safelite would not have.

Thanks in advance for any help in this matter.

Safelite did mine, 10 year ago. Nice young man did it in a parking lot where I worked. Overall, a good experience. I would recommend that you review expectations with them before starting work, such as what is needed to protect interior of car. Hood area too. Specifically dash area and seats.

Thanks! Any recommendations for protecting the car? I hadn't thought about that aspect of it.

I had Safelite do mine two years ago now. You're going to want to talk to the tech working at that location and ask if they have ever done a Corvette windshield. I called the first one and they said I should call a different branch that had a tech who had done a lot over the years. He also said they don't recommend having it done outdoors. They had me bring the car to their shop and it took them most of the day. I wasn't in any hurry. I dropped the car off the day before. They did okay. After the work the targa top didn't line up as well as it did before. So I had to readjust it. But not a big deal.

Also check your insurance. I cracked my windshield with a screwdriver by accident, and the insurance replaced it and all the needed weatherstripping for free.

I made the mistake of assuming that the tech would do a good job of protecting adjacent surfaces. My recollection is that the steering wheel got scuffed, and the dash area looked like a party was held, without the cleanup. But it mostly was ok. Just dressed up the wheel as best I could and lived with it. I will almost always cut a young person a break, thinking they have much to learn, so I did not hammer on him. I told him that some Vette owners are known to be A holes, and it would be good for him going forward to do better. The windshield never leaked, and his work was good. The trim ring was saveable. The price seemed really low.

As the post above says, quiz Safelite a little and make sure they have the right guy for the job. A few moving blankets or similar is all that is really needed to,protect. My opinion anyway.

let us know how it works out.

So here's how it went:

I called my insurance, I have a $250 deductible to replace the windshield but the replacement is covered. I made an appointment with safelite on their website, they said it was fully covered, and was due for the replacement last Thursday. I got a call from them Weds afternoon to tell me that they don't do Corvettes or old/specialty cars and gave me the number of someone who does.

So I called the number (Ultimate Auto Glass) and made an appointment with them. I sent them the car info and a pic to show that the old windshield was already removed. He came to my house yesterday and installed the new glass for $250. Easy job for him as it was just install, no removal/trim etc. There was no need to protect anything although I had supplies ready.

They scratched the hood of my car (not my corvette) and did such a bad job that trim pieces around the windshield didn’t fit - my dad picked the car up for me and hadn’t noticed. I brought it back to them and they agreed to redo it, which meant new glass, again.

They scratched the hood of my old truck replacing front glass. They did a good job replacing rear glass (save for they didn’t clean up any of the shattered glass in the car, but whatever).

I don’t have either vehicle anymore, but those 2 experiences sure weren’t good ones.

After going through the experience I can say that the hard part is the removal and cleaning. The installation of the new glass was smooth and relatively easy and pain free, I realize that I hired a pro for this part, and therefore it should look relatively easy, but still the level of effort removing the old glass and cleaning off the residue and removing trim was high. I would guess this is likely where the damage to peoples' cars is easiest to occur,
