Hello everyone! I was recently at my first autocross event and realized that I should probably paint my car. It’s very sun faded as you can see below and the clear coat is peeling everywhere.
I was wondering what you guys might know about sanding, priming, and then paint? Tips? Process to sanding as I don’t really know where to start(what grit I would be needing). Things like that.
I have put lots of time into researching this and everyone seems to have a different way of doing things. So I have fallen back onto the beautiful forum! Any info will help a ton! Thanks
Many years ago now, but I had a 91 coupe with bad paint. Whole car was worth maybe $6000 on a good day. Quality repaint is easily over that. So, I studied up and painted it myself. Not perfect, but not bad, and a huge improvement over what it was. Did 7 videos of what I went through. Here is a link to first one.
I had a similar issue, tho with red it looks way worse than your shade of blue, and was more extensive. Who'd pay 7-12k for a paint job on a Vette worth 3k cause the engine scares buyers away.
I have a thread on my paint job. Depending on your clear coat start with 120grit to bust thru the clear. If it is as uber hard as mine was bump up to 80 grit. Once you are thru the clear 220 works great. Wear anti vibe gloves, hearing protection, and a quality dust mask.
You need to educate yourself first and foremost about the hazards associated with all aspects of this type of work. You'll be working with materials that can ruin your health if adequate precautions are not taken. Once armed with the knowledge you need about working safely, you can then move on to learning about all of the other aspects of the job.
A few years back had a 89 clear coat redone came out looking like new, talk to a paint shop about the possess was a 3ed cheaper that paint might work for yours ..
