Cheapest and easiest solution - portable Bluetooth speaker. I research fixing my bose system and decided I rather spend the time driving it.

Most likely the capacitors in your speaker amps (1 amp in each speaker) have deteriorated (leaked) and the amps need to be rebuilt. This is solely a function of age and is common in older Bose systems. There are numerous places to get these repaired, do a search on here. Prices vary from $100-200 for the service and you have to remove the speakers and send them in for repair or do the research and fix them yourself for way less.

If you do swap to an aftermarket system I would try and run new speaker wires. I just redid mine in the '88 and it was pretty easy.

When I did an after market (Pioneer DEH-P47DH), which was a pretty old receiver, I reused the speaker wires, and put in new speakers as well. Except for splicing in the wiring harness, it was pretty much a direct bolt in. Looking just now for an upgrade, which I really just need bluetooth so I can play audio off my phone.

To the OP, with the Bose, the amp is in each speaker, IIRC. You need to get your multimeter out and start testing.

We have a dedicated audio system section on the forum: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...lectronics-20/
Sadly lots of the pics in older useful threads have expired but the discussions are still there.

I installed an aftermarket system to my '91 many years ago. I went with 1DIN head unit, separate front speaker kit, 2 channel amplifier to the subs and 2x 8" subs to the original rear speaker boxes. I put the crossovers under the HU and used all new power and speaker cables.

Works nicely but I plan to move the treble elements up to maybe the door panel or something. They are muffled a bit when they are down there with the mid range speakers.

Here are few pics:

1 DIN bracket and the 2 (red) crossovers under the head unit space:

Rear 8" sub amplifier located under passenger seat:

The DIY front speaker boxes with mid range and the treble elements:

Power connection with a large fuse:

The 8" sub in a sealed passenger side rear speaker box with a DIY speaker adapter/ring:

Rear subs with new carpet:

And the head unit playing some music:
