That is a common fault, they all break sooner or later and that is a common problem with the newer style of gauges (90-). Batee will repair yours or you can fix it yourself with their parts.

My 91 shows 2000 rpms at idle. I hoped there was a simple fix, but nothing is simple on a C4. Batee has a repair video and sells the parts. The repair looks easy, once you pull the panel from your car.
