Good Morning. New to this forum and wanted to start with a short introduction. I live in Napa Ca- I previously built a Factory Five Mk II with my son in law back in 2008- Nice clean FF Roadster with a built up 351W. Engine built by a builder in Sonoma (Bad *** Racing)- Approx 405HP- Sold the Roadster in 2020- I am now 73 as the car was best suited for younger drivers- Two knee replacements and some significant weight loss later, I've always wanted a Corvette so I bought on off BaT Auctions last month- 1990 C-4 , 5.7L L-98- A little milder than I was used to but well suited for my wife and I on Sunday cruises- Car has 31.5 K Miles and drives & handles nicely- Replaced the tires immediately (16 Yrs Old)- Dropped it off at a local (Vacaville Ca) Vette shop for some updates and Mods- All fluids flush- TOTAL Tune up- Repair Tach misreads (Shows 1800 RPM High)- Install a new Borla Exhaust System and general fine tooth comb issues (Hoses- Belts- Pads- Codes -etc) Asked them about a cold air intake addition and was told that is Non existent in California as C.A.R.B. updated standards prohibits this in CA- Just checking with others here (The Experts) whether this is actually true or is there any other way to add a few HP- Not looking for the same HP I had in my Roadster, I would just like to have a hew in the bank if needed-
I have already learned a plethora of info on this car- From new tire selections (Staggered Tires and wheels to wheel locks with no key) I am a good mechanic but definitely at this age, flexibility challenged- My crawling under cars, electrical gremlins and computer code days are pretty much over- Thanks in advance for your comraderies and I love this family- Guys (And Girls) like us will never die off!! We'll simply drive off into the sunset with our drams. Brian
I live near the air base in Fairfield. In fact, my username comes from the Kalitta Air cargo airline that flies out of Travis. I haven't taken my Corvette out to Napa yet but it has been a fun mini-trip destination I've kept in mind once its running reliably enough.
I live in the hills behind and above Napa- 15 Miles up Suisun Valley Rd. Every time I take the Vette out of the garage, it's a 12 mile road tour through the Grape Vines and rolling hills either into Napa- or St. Helena or even Fairfiled- Nice days' work!! BW
Welcome to the forum and the C4 madness! The tach error is a normal malady. Check out batee.com They are the go to for C4 instrument troubles. There is a video on replacing a resistor that cures the tach error. They will sell you the necessary parts, of do the repair work. A great asset to the C4 community!
Welcome to the monkey island, pull up a rock and crack a beer.
I'm in Folsom now, but lived in Suisun for 16 years.
It used to be a small quiet little Air Force town, but that up and changed some years ago.
My '90 looks a lot like yours except for a Saddle interior and slightly wider back end, and about twice as much HP.
Adding more power pretty easy for you, nothing particularly cheap though.
Especially if you're paying someone else to do the work.
If you have $$ to spare consider upgrading to a ZR-1.
Best money I've spent.
I've had a plethora of hot rods over the years, and none quite compare to my ZR-1.
Girlfriend (my Z's nickname) is civilized and reliable for everyday driving, smooth idle (quite unlike comparable HP SBCs I've owned in the past), and predictable.
Open the throttle and she's a beast. In a good way.
Asked them about a cold air intake addition and was told that is Non existent in California as C.A.R.B. updated standards prohibits this in CA- Just checking with others here (The Experts) whether this is actually true or is there any other way to add a few HP
Welcome!
I don't think there's any intakes available on the market that are C.A.R.B.-compliant. This will actually save you some money, as none of the aftermarket intakes offer performance gains over the stock airbox. The best (and cheapest) option is to modify the air box lid like this:
You can either DIY or buy a pre-made one for less than $100 from most of the big online Corvette parts stores. It's worth a couple of HP and a little more intake noise.
Welcome to the forum! Lots of good folks here willing to help with info. I too am getting slower, 77, but just bought a nice 96 Collector Ed. Also had a FF roadster with a built 302, 350 hp some years ago. Fun car but was getting less flexible to roll under and work on it. As you can tell from signature, retired USAF and flew in and out of Travis a lot many years ago. In central Calif now in small ag community. Again, welcome... Randy
