Default transmission

hello, i have a 1985 chevy corvette hatchback. it has the L98 engine. i only use car for nccc autocross. the last time out after a few runs the transmission started leaking fluid. i have not jacked it up and thouroughly inspected yet.where the fluid is coming from. it is an automatic. what transmission should be in this car? what would be the best option if i were to get another transmission? i am going to lift it this weekend to do more troubleshooting. thank you

I had an '85 that I ran in autocross. Blew the front pump seal which was a weak point. My transmission friend told me that my trans had a 5 vane pump and the later ones had 7 vane. He rebuilt it, did something to the valve body etc. I believe yours can be built up or maybe swapped to a later one but I'm not an expert on trans swaps. Good luck.

I would Look under it and find the source, you might get lucky and its only a Loose line.
My Pump seal went out after only 11k miles on a Rebuild from a shop so do you research before taking it to a shop.
If you do put another one in use a Trans cooler.
I just got mine back and had it Rebuilt with Heavy Duty parts and a shift Kit.
Only Gripe I have is they changed the Shift Cable and left screws out the console cover, shifter **** loose and the Corvette Emblem is missing on the seat control Cover ( oh brother)
Wish I put a shift kit in it when I got it. Wow, Better MPG and its allot more fun to drive, She scoots along Nicely.

I believe it's generally thought that if you have a C4 with the 700R4 and are interested in a replacement you use a 700R4/4L60 w/aux valve body. An '87 would be the first year for the C4 w/aux valve body. Using a 700R4/4L60 from other than a C4 will require some modifications.
